Best Defensive techniques

I must say, I still have some problems in defense especially my opponent has a lot of skillful players like Pele and Henry. I tried a lot of options in defense such as Sweeper, Line and Normal. I usually play with Brazil with 4 players in the back and I edit thier positions little closer near the goal keeper. I tried offside trap. It works fine but it screws me some other times. Do I have to use man mark? does it really work?
The main problem I face as well is when I have a corner kick, sometimes I find 2 of my defenders go all the way to my opponent's penality area to assist which makes me very vulnerable to counter attacks!!
Any thoughts on how to master defense by using a certian formation, technigue or strategy? Thanks :)

i agree with zyg. my formation looks like this
------GK-------
RB--CB--CB--LB
-----DM---DM---
RM-----------LM
-----OMF------
-----------CF---

it works pretty good. especially if u give one of DMF's attacking arrows so it bombs forward to give some support. It also gives u added security at the back, so if you dont score, you atleast wouldnt concede

Do you give arrows to the RB and LB, as I play 3-2-3-2 with RB and LB arrows going forward in 4*. And I am going to start 5* and should I put arrows on RB and LB and what kind of marking system should I use for them?

I will try that one, I usually have only one DMF, but it is quite risky. Do you usually change arrows in defensive and offensive layers settings? I used to do that, but I noticed they got lost once I choose any one of the "Quick Tactics" in the main menu. I usually go for "Balanced", it is quite good in defense and offense.

who is the CF? Is it attacking enough to just have one OMF and one CF?

I don't think it is useful to have only one CF and OMF. This will reduce your chances in scroring from especially from counter attacks. I find playing with 3 players at front puts a constant pressure on the defense of your opponent.

OK then, how about a 4-2-1-3?
I am getting to believe that this is the best formation to start with and then you can "position edit" some of your players. I came from an old school of winning eleven and I was really unbeatable with 4-1-2-3 formation. however, in WE7 I have some defensive problems with that formation though I score a lot. But it sucks that sometimes I conceive goals at kiling times that I have no time to retaliate at all!!...
Currently I have 4-2-1-3 and 4-1-2-3 and switch automatically the strategy during the game.
It works great for me... :)

yea zyg is right.. and if u are still having difficulties.. tell ur side midifielders to drop right back... give them the big arrrows... and this will push ur side backs into the centre more.. which also allows you to break out with classy players better...

i have ronaldo up front & ronaldinho in omf. and also i yes, i do put attacking arrows on my full backs, Bridge & Thuram, so they also bomb forward to support the attack. Duff and Titanes on the wings also get forward whilst Makelele sits back and Lampard normally ends up just behind the attack. It gets alot of people forward, without leaving me too exposed at the back. It all depends really though, Im good going forward, but normally im crap at defending so i chose 4-5-1a (i think) and tweaked it a bit, now it seems to suit me perfectly.
My bro uses a 4-2-1-3 formation and he recommends it highly. Its what i use if im chasing a game and dont want to concede another.

Anybody noticed that all attacking arrows are lost once you choose anyone of the "Quick Tactics"??
Also, What do you guys like to choose in team tactics?? as you know you have four tactics zone press, offside trap, backline, and counter attack and you set them choosing A, B, C or D. Usually I go for zone press as A, and the rest I set them to B's. It works fine, but confuses me sometimes especially that I usually have zone press as one of the strategies (From the strategy menu"!
Any Thoughts?

I have to say, playing on 4* I have no problems with only one dmf, in a standard 4-4-2, I edit his postition so he is just in front of the centre halves. He gives plenty of cover and I very rarely consider any goals finished the master league with 9 conceded in 26 matches, which I thought was ok.

When on 3* I used a 3-4-3, with 3 cb's a dmf, rm, lm, omf and 3 cf's one playing slightly deeper. As long as your dmf has half decent pace to get out to the wings and cover I found I didn't miss the full backs at all. And with six players attacking, I could easily win most games.
