Wow Konami needs to step back and have a look at what a great job Activision is doing with Call of Duty. Beginning with COD4, they virtually changed the way gamers player shooters. The online mode was flawless and provided the kind of gaming experience that made people go back for more everytime they hit the power button on their console. The graphics and gameplay pushed the realism of the game to levels no one imagined where possible. In fact so many people still play the game years after its release which is a true example of a game that is timeless in its value to the person who buys it.
Then came COD5 and COD MW2.
COD5 was a brilliant game and still satisfied gamers who wanted a new refreshing story while maintaining the essence of the games core values which are good gameplay overall. Activision showed how a company is able to stick to its roots without compromising the people who play the game and yet this was only the tip of the iceberg.
COD MW2 is just breath taking. I got my PS3 copy of the game and it felt like Christmas Day. I went to the stores and people where lined up in the streets on a cold night waiting to get their hands on a copy of COD. Despite the higher cost of the game this year, more of my friends have been willing to pay it because we know we will get value for money on the game ... and yes so far it is delivering.
Konami have been a disappointment for a very long time and I cannot remember the last time I was this excited about PES. Activision have done a fine job with this franchise. I walked past GAME (I local retail store in the UK) and I saw a sign outside stating "CALL OF DUTY - SOLD OUT". I wasn't even surprised. In this day and age gamers dont just want a rehash of the same games we were getting on the PS2. Gamers want games that will be part of the centrepiece of their entertainment systems 24/7 - 365.
Its sad to see a game I once loved enough to line up for on launch day go down the toilet but the reality of modern gaming is that some companies like Activision are managing to thrive on the next gen consoles while others like Konami are failing to compete. COD MW2 is going to break a lot of game sales records.
I can honestly say I will be playing COD MW2 more than PES. As was the case when i got my hands on COD4. In fact I may just trade in PES2010 and get another copy of COD MW2 for my XBOX 360.
