Are you sure that you're doing it right? You press the button (R2/RT) WHILE the power is going up, not at the same time that you press square/xbox equivalent (as you do on fifa).
It's supposed to be a placed shot, but it doesn't always work. I made a thread on it a few weeks back (called No I didn't Tell you to do that... or something... have a look back a few pages).
So you basically press square THEN R2/RT when the amount of power is sufficient. The best times to do it are when your 1-on-1 with the gk.
As with all the shooting on this game (hell, the game in general), it's very hit and miss.

I looked on youtube and most controlled shot videos are where the ball is essentially lobbed past the keeper from long distance, especially from the corners of the 18 yard box. It's not exactly a lob, more like a mix between a lob and long shot.
How can I tell if i do the control shot correctly? Does it not work if I set the power, then press RT before he shoots?

Controlled shots are often very weak and side-footed, this is how you can usually tell.
It's hard to explain when you should press the button without being able to physically show you. Therer may be a tuitorial vid in the game somewhere.
Basically just press R2 after you have pressed the shoot button, with a bit of practice, you should get it. Like I said, doesn't work all the time though.
