Could this be handball

I notice something new on my WE7 this morning.

CPU kicked a long ball from their half to about some 28m from my goalmouth. The ball was chested by one of my defender. Suddenly the ref whistled and accord possession to the CPU. I have no inkling what is going on as no one was near to my defender. Could it be handball? Unfortunately my game in Jap, hence I could navigate and perform a closer view of the incident.

Correction- I could not navigate the menu as I do not understand Japanese. Is handball a new feature in WE7?

Yes, handball is a feature in WE7. That's not to say it's implemented too well, however.

Firstly, it appears that an opposing defender never seems to have a handball claim against him in the box which is dissapointing. Other times, harsh decisions (whacking the ball at point blank range into the defender's arm resulting in a very enticing free kick position) come in to play but I guess that can be counted as realistic.

I think it would be better if there was an indication on screen telling us a handball had been awarded because sometimes you can be left wondering what the hell went on. The jumbled up 'handball' in Kabira's incoherent Japanese commentary is not enough, especially for us.

Generally though, a good first try.

Totally agree with you PicturePerfect, they have given it a try and it's not bad...but it does get frustrating. I remember a game against West Ham (my bogie team), I was 1-0 up and they hit a long ball downfield my defender tracked back and was about to control the ball as it came down in my own box and then the ref went and pointed to the spot...87th minute. I wasn't happy to say the least. In that sense it does kind of leave you thinking what the hell just happened.

Great shout about the icon, like the advantage one. :)

Ouch. That's harsh. I'm assuming they converted the penalty? :)

Maybe we could have a whole series of hand gestures come up in the top-left hand screen? ;)

No, no, I'm getting carried away.

Yeah they smashed it home. :(

maybe they could put the ref on the pitch and give him all the hand gestures in the book :)

I don't think your getting carried away, the ref and linesman usually signal this kind of stuff, but that brings the problem of getting them in the picture at the right time. I don't want to see it go the way of a cut sequence every time like, so maybe more top left corner gestures would be a good idea. Maybe a flag facing certain ways so you know when the computer cheats and gives themselves a throw which is clearly yours ;)

Definitely. I wonder when they will enter the referee into the fray. It'll be interesting to know what the main focusing are will be for WE8/PES4. Maybe they'll concentrate more on presentation and extra options rather then overhauling the gameplay.

My mate was complaining about how the yellow icon signifying the advantage wasn't clear enough on screen earlier yesterday. I dismissed it as whinging since his team was down but now this has got me thinking. If they were to introduce new prompts on screen, aside from being a different colour, they should probably be accompanied by a sound of some form.

Like a 'Bing' for advantage and a 'Bang' for handball. :)

I'm not too good with acoustics but I think you catch my drift. ;)

For handhall, they could have the fans shouting 'Handball!' and for advantage, you could hear someone in the crowd saying, 'are you blind ref?'

I hope it is better than the handballs in TIF2003, which lead you to being booked for no reason.

Sometimes I can hear it because of those large mics placed a few metres from the goal but generally, no. Maybe it's a reception problem. :)

Maybe a collective "Hey!" or "Oi!" along with some "Ohh!"'s and "Ahh"'s.

And, if the crowd shouted handball everytime there was an incident, would that mean they would be right all the time or would play only stop sometimes?

I think it should stop sometimes, look how often the crowd get pissed off with the ref when he makes a few mistakes. However, I could dop without 'the crowd aren't happy with that descision' every time.

What about a cut scene switching to Ferguson coining words along the lines of, "It's a 'kin Joke" Obvioulsy not saying 'kin'.

Consider this scenario, you are attacking your opponent in waves and are controlling the game but just could not score, suddenly your opponent hit a long ball deep into your half within the penalty box, the ref whistled for hand ball and point to the spot and the game ended with the CPU winning 1-0. This is exactly what will happen if Konami becomes too ambitious. In real life, we tend to curse the ref if the handball was unintentional. Sometimes it really difficult to adjudge whether the handball infraction is indeed intentional unless it is really clear cut such as when you intercept a high lob with your hands or your player dived to retrieve the ball instead of your keeper. In a computer game, it is obvious that we cannot control the players' hands and thus the infraction is definitely unintentional. Unless Konami can come up with a different button where we can deliberately jump and intercept a cross with our hands or dive to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net with our bare hands, it does not create more value to the game other than interfering with smooth gameply.

Now THAT would be realistic. In the next few minutes you could have the fans shouting 'the referees a (insert popular expletive here)'.

I haven't seen a penalty given for handball yet. All fouls are usually in favour of the defence in these situations.
