Couple of gameplay questions

Defense - I am a bit confused on this front, I find it very hard to use the contain button because usually players are sprinting, do you guys usually press r1+r2+x to contain? I am always at sea trying to do this, I usually end up always calling a second player and let the computer do most of the defending for me but this works terribly against non cpu opponents.
Any advice on how to defend well?

Attack - Using the right analog stick, i am unable to get the player to run in the direction I want, while i know how to activate the guy to make a forward run I believe you can also control the direction you want him to do so. How exactly do you do this?

thanks

For the defensive side, it's all about timing. The system is very rewarding when done correctly.

Basically, hold R2 and X together to jockey, and don't panic. Wait for a good opportunity to hit X again and put a foot in. If you do it too early, you will concede a cheap free kick. You'll find that the AI will be held up more often than not, and sometimes your player will put a foot in anyway if in a good enough position.

I struggle with defending a lot on Top player level, as a ps3 user,

i use R1 + L to get my player into defending position (ideallly face the
opponent), then press Cross to hold up, double tapping Cross for a
quick tackle requires perfect timing, otherwise it will result in a booking even a red card if from behind, i think you need to work out the best
range and time to tackle in, that takes practice in different matches.
Defending well or bad also depend on which team you play with, which player you defend against, which difficulty level you play on.

Sliding tackle works great sometimes. I think there is no set defending patterns to follow in different situations, maybe i wrong.

You may practise defending in TRAINNING, that should help.

For me, i played with Spain on topplayer level, when i defend players like Cesc fabregas or Silver, one wrong moves or ill-timed tackle in will
get me screwed straight away, have not tried Super star level yet, hope to do it soon.

GOOD LUCK

To defend i do something different to what has been posted and find it to be very good.

Basically hold them up with x, you can use r1 too to get in position but hold x once goalside and just tap r1 which will edge you closer to them keep tapping until you ar happy with position. From here you will figure out the best time to get a foot in.

Also works great when running alongside a player.

Since i adopted these tactics i have rarley conceded on top player
