Hi, I'm new, so I'm probably not the first one to say this but...
When you change a player's stats, it's still on default in the Master League.
(Not the special ability, only the 'regular' ability stays on default)
So I changed a few players by taking a whole other player instead. (And then changing his name, appearance etc to the player you want it to be. Then register your new player to the teams he should be in and remove the old default player.)
I've played PES5 for a long time but I finally tackled some of the problems you face while doing so:
1) Nationality. Let's say you want a Ronaldinho that has better stats. His stats in the game are quite average (I mean, they are good, but not as high as they should be, his shooting, free kicks, speed and dribble accuracy are far too low). The best player in the game is Maradona. His stats could be Ronaldinho's, I mean Maradona's stats are crazy but then again, we're talking about Ronaldinho.
If you want to change Maradona to Ronaldinho, that's possible, except for nationality, so you can only use him in a club, not the national team, because Maradona has the Argentinian nationality.
Solution: Go to register player (club teams), select Maradona from Classic Argentina (buy this team first in the PES Shop in Options), and register him to a club. Now when you go to Edit Player, you can also change his nationality. After this, you can also add him to the national team (logically, by swapping him with the default Ronaldinho, in this example) PS Maradona's has only 3 on condition but this isn't really bad, his stamina is OK and during a season it doesn't really affect like you would expect. Tip: go to team formation, go to individual, and put his defence on low. Then he tires less. This also helps for attackerss with low stamina stats.
2) Player age. If you have changed a player following above example, and you search this player in the Master League, his age is still the default setting of the 'Classic' player you used as a blueprint.
Solution: When you start a new Master League after the editing, the age is also correct.
3) Messi. Which 'classic' or 'secret' player's stats closely mirror those of the world's most exciting young talent?
I've searched some and I think Hugo Sanchez from Mexico is the best bet. (Awesome pace, dribbling, response, shooting accuracy, but not crazy high on balance, stamina, shooting power, header)
For appearance, I've also searched this boards, no internet at home so I can't try the appearances I found on this board on my PS2 right now, but I think you should use hairstyle 259 if I remember correctly, there is also a preset face of which I can't remember the number (thought it was 92 or something) which is quite good.
4) Position in starting eleven. When you change a team's formation, for instance you want Messi to be in Barca's starting eleven instead of Giuly, you can change this in Edit Team but then a computer team will still start with Giuly. You should change it in Register Player, by registering the new player to the club, then register the player that must leave the starting eleven to another club (only the player for this position!) > then another player from the squad fills in the spot. Repeat until the right player appears on this position. Then register the removed players back to the club. When you don't get the right player filling in the spot, like, a whole bunch of others except the one you want, try Edit Player (the one you want to fill in the spot), Position, and give the player as preferred position (with the yellow circle behind it) the position in the team. This position should be the team's default position > if you have changed the team formation, use the default position the player should be in.
5) Other classic players are bought by other ML teams. If you are like me and you want your PES to mirror reality, it is annoying when your Master League opponents are starting to buy players from Classic Argentina (or any other non existing players, or default players you threw away because you wanted to use a better 'classic' one like described above).
I have not found a solution for this problem yet. As far as I know, you can not 'delete' these players. Anyone got a solution for this? Does it help to move them to PES United, because then they're not affiliated (and thus free), while still not in a team competing in the Master League? I'll try this.
6) Be sure to edit everyting that needs to be edited, including basic settings such as age, running style, goal celebration, player name, commentary player name (if the name is not available, set it on 'number'), player number etc. It is also annoying if your new star attacker plays with shirt number 1 and the commentary calls him Tom while his name should be Harry.
I'm sure you're familiar with lots of everything mentioned above but I hope some tips help you over problems that seem hard to solve.
