defence, a big issue

Defence is the black sheep of pro evolution. I¨ve seen loads of hints for attacking techniques but...hey what about defence!! Actually, I think it is much more challenging in this game to play proper defence than attacking, and I consider this point one of the worst mistakes of this game, and defence is the core of any competitive team! (If u Don¨t agree see the monaco-real madrid match)So I would like to start with this thread a serie of tips about all the defensive stuff: formations, strategies, teams.. In my case I would like to write some tips very useful for me:
-Never use (or at least seldom) the :circle:. And I repeat NEVER. A proper defence never involves using the side tackle. On the other hand, hold the forward at bay by moving around and using :x: when u see the attacker moves the ball too forward.
-Defence is not putting loads of defenders, instead of it, it is better a 4-5-1 formation. Use also de offside trap, and consider the goalkeeper as a very active member of your strategy. undefined

I totally disagree with you about not ever sliding. Perhaps, in the 18yd box, you should very rarely slide However, sometimes the slide is the only way to block the attackers shot/cross, cos we all know how lousy the GK's can be in PES.

Outside the 18ydr, I think sliding, if used properly, is one of the best ways of regaining possession. I mean, if the player telegraphs where he is going to pass to, why not slide into the path of ball, and intercept it? A better yet example is when your player is running side by side with the attacker, but not actully slowing him down or looking like beating him in the challenge (like most chalenges on Veron or Shevchenko). Sometimes, if you position your defender alongside the attacker just right, you can slide from side-on/behind him, and you will hook your leg around their player, and tackle the ball completely cleanly. This, I admit, takes ALOT of practice adnd just a little bit of luck.

Nothing annoys me more in PES then when a winger or wide forward gets the ball from say, 30yds out, and they run diagonally in towards your penalty box, and all your defender does (while you hold down 'X') is try to grab their shirt or whatever, or worse yet, your defender falls over, and the striker strides into the box and scores. It not only looks ridiculous, but is a tad unrealistic IMHO.

The offside trap is great against the CPU, but in multiplayer, I find it gets beaten oh too easily by balls over the top, even with top teams like ManUtd and Milan, let alone with more enjoyable teams like Sengal and Jamaica. It's ridiculous.

Your point about the GK is spot on however.

i try to mix up my defense techniques, but usually i will:

press :x: (with or without :R1: ) to get close to the ball carrier. when i'm close enough, i will press :L1: (to toggle my cursor to the next closest defender), while at the same time pressing :circle:. so basically, i'll be covering or trying to cut off passing lanes, and hopefully picking up alot of loose balls.

sliding helps you just have to time it to a T.

defending is piss easy

So you never let in any goals then Monkeylover? I find that hard to believe. I find defending a lot easier now that I've changed the Player Choice setting to manual. I find changing player myself far more effective than the CPU changing for me and always choosing the defender that has the least chance of doing anything!!!

On the topic of defending, does anyone have any tips for defending corners? Is it just a matter of timing your defenders header? What else can you do? Or is it just luck?

About the side tackle I think the point is using it just in some occasions when you see it is quite sure you are going to get the ball, without touching the other player (in this game even if you touch firstly the ball the referee will consider it as a fault) and about avoiding the cross using the side tackle is not a solution for me. It can produce in many occasions a fault which a skillful player can take advantage of it... using the goalkeeper and trying a 2 against one in the side are the main things I use. And of course I don¨t see the point about considering the offside useless, in multiplayer matches. In fact, I usually play against very competitive players and if you know how to use it (when, how and with which formation) it can be superb. But you also need practice as always.
On the other hand I think Mumpleaser has showed a great point about the manual setting (it could be obvious for many of you but a lot of people has never think about it), the automatic one, I agree is horrible.
About defending corners...well I think or at least I don´t know any way of defending them specially if beckham is the kicker.. Any tip about corners will be very useful (well, having tall defenders obviously helps a lot and using the :triangle: when the ball is not very far away from your goalkeeper so he can catch it)

The sliding tackle debate is an interesting one, I recently stopped using the slide as much because of the high number of players I had sent off. Using it to block shots or intercept passes is useful.

The real key trick with defending is reading the game, the CPU will always perform a set certain amount of moves, the trick is to anticapte them. For example (and I hope I explain this correctly) if the CPU player has his back to your player with the ball at his feet it's worth heading round one side to make the tackle and then changing at the last minute, chances are the CPU player will have try to outfox you by going in the opposite direction to the one he thought you were coming in and you should be able to nick the ball of him (now I'm sure it doesn't make any sense!)

Of course I play a patient passing game so rarely have to do any defending!! tee hee

thre is no need to slide to block shots as it has the same effect if u just stand a run at the shot. i have trouble is defence only against my mates not the computer. i sometime panic and start sliding the problem is that as i have not changed the settings then it chnges player and my whole defence slides as it changes just as i push :circle: best ot keep on your feet and let the opposition make the mistake.
the computer are predictable for example when chasing a player down the line as they head for your box. if your close they always turn back before crossing the ball, so all u have to do is turn before they do and u will regain possention

when you have a tall player like vieria, or in my case leon cort its quite simple to perform succesful sliding tackles, if u want 2 push a player off the ball i.e the X tackle then u need a player with low centre of gravity and good balance

if you worried about defending corners, a tactic i use is quickly inter change one of my big strikers for some a dmf or someone who will be in the box during the corner and as soon as the cross is over i inter change them back to their normal positions

PES players always have fixed patterns, like the wingers dash down the wings then abbruptly turn, and I always stand in front of them to dispossess them. Simple :)

Anyway about the slide tackle,

It's better to use it for the fun of the game. Some exciteness, at performing a horrendous excellent tackle or commiting the most terrible foul of the century :)

Without them feels like something's missing :(

I know of some people who never use 50-50 balls like high goal kick, long pass, or cross.

They always do ground passes to the opponent's goal.

How boring is that???

I tend to find backing off the attacker a couple of paces allows the defender to set himself better to make a 'proper' tackle with X.

press R2 to shadow the attacker & it blocks most passing oppurtunities off. then when he is about to pass or runs at you, you can easily nick the ball off them.

My success with defending corners has improved dramatically since I put marking stars to all my players apart from forwards. And overall gameplay is much better too...
