Demon's Soul (PS3)

Anyone else pick this up? Was released on Friday 25th for the PS3 in a very nice collectors edition with a fan made strategy guide, artbook and OST.

So far, I can attest to the claims that this game is hard, and i'm still only on world 1-1!! There are no checkpoints and if you die thats it, WHAM right back to the start of the level!!

Nearly got to the end of it after dying about 5 or so times. The lack of a pause button contributed to those though, with having to answer the phone and front door while surrounded by 4 undead soldiers.....came back to see the level reset to the beginning =[

It may be hard, but it is very "just one more attempt" style play. Trial and error and all that. Possibly the neatest feature though is the way the online is set up. People can leave messages on the ground or on the wall for other players to see letting them know about booby traps, ambushes, hidden items et al, as well as being able to view the deaths of other players by touching their blood spills, which can give useful hints about what is coming next.

I look forward to getting pissed off and killed countless times in this game =]

I bought it on release, but I'm yet to start it yet.

I'm waiting for the weather to cool down before I do. I know if I play it now I'll just start raging and sweating and raging some more.

It's a very nice collection for £40 though. I'm going to start reading some of the strategy guide tonight.

So the only reason you're not playing this game is because you will sweat?

Take off that bloody scarf Dan!

Just played it for about an hour or so today because I know i'm back in full time employment tomorrow, so I don't want to get too obsessed and not be able to play it!! I don't find dying annoying though. I know I should but it's too fun lol.

I'm not gonna actually read the actual walkthrough part, but theres a lot of info in it about weapons and equipment you can collect. The artbook is very nice as well!!

I'm really looking forward to getting far enough into the game whereby people can invade your gameworld, and then try and kill you to steal your souls!! You can do it to other people as well =] should be very fun!!

I saw someone else talking about this game on another forum a while back and it sounded really interesting. Dan and Jonno, you'll have to let me know whether it's worth getting, although I probably won't play it 'til a few months time so will only buy it if I see it going cheap.

ermm, never played either of them, but it's unlike anything i've played before.

You have your home hub "The Nexus". Here you can buy weapons, get items stored and talk to a few NPCs for info. You then choose which area you want to go to from there. You are dropped into an area of the game, with no real goal laid out before you apart from going forward and trying not to get raped by the demons. The levels are pretty large and there are chances for exploration, but you wont get lost or stuck figuring out where you have to go.

That being said, the game isn't cheap, if you die it's your own fault for rushing in or trying to just go in all swords blazing!! You will never really find yourself overwelmed by enemies like you do in God of War or Bayonetta or the likes, only because Demon's Soul isn't about that. The combat is all about taking your time, using the environment to your benefit (ie not swinging wildly while in a corridor and using thrusts instead) and thinking, not just tapping buttons for multi death combos. The enemies get to utilise the same tactics you do, and the enemy AI knows how to fight, and you will often come up against an enemy who knows you want to do that kidney stab move, and will always cover his side and his back, so you'll have to take him out differently, maybe a crossbow bolt to the head? Stronger enemies can also heal themselves.

Mike, you're no good at anything that requires the slightest bit of skill.

EDIT - I just had a brief go on it.

I started as a Knight and everything went fine until I came up against this enemy who killed me with a single gut stab. Twice. I'm going to start again as Royalty which is supposed to the best for new comers.

Maybe it's just because I was a Knight, but there didn't seem to be any instructions or guides to using magic? I'll consult the manual when I create my new player tomorrow.

Them skeletons are a bastard if you don't use magic or fire. The thief's ring is a gift from God too!

Havent been able to play this for the last week due to work, tried level 1-2 again today. First of all I got toasted by a dragon while walking along a wall, then three times in a row I get raped by a bunch of 7 dog/wolf things.

There is another route, but i'm not giving up on handing these canines there arses.

Fantastic game. I got it on US Import way back when and fell in love with it, when time would allow it that is. One of the very best games, ever. It's old school; no check points, no walk through, no short cuts. It is pure skill, determination, and trial by error learning from your mistakes. A challenging breath of fresh air. I may get the EU edition to support the title further, as it certainly deserves it. Collector's Edition would be sweet, too. Shame I'm already 60 odd hours into my US Import. Any EU purchase would be little other than eye candy due to seperate save files. Unless I do it all over with a fresh character at some stage.
