Dear Konami,
For the past 15 years I have been an avid supporter of yours, and an active defender of the PES franchise. I always felt like I was the 'real' football fan playing PES, regardless of what global sales suggested. I consider myself a decent player (I should be after the time put in!) and in my glory days even won a national competition with a big cash prize!
Licenses, real player names and smooth animations were so much less important to me than gameplay. In fact I actually enjoyed the editing side of PES. I even used to love the crazy but quirky Japanese elements of the game - the dinosaur heads etc.
For me, nothing was ever better than building a Master League team from scratch, holding affection year after year for Minanda, Castolo and company.
So why am I writing this now? Well finally I feel like I can't possibly defend the game any more.
Let me firstly say that I will continue to buy PES (just because I always will!), but at the same time I am so frustrated with Konami as a company. I want this to resonate with you like when your parents tell you they're 'disappointed', not 'angry'. There are so many things that are simply unforgivable this year. The ironic thing is that this year, I love the gameplay, and playing with friends offline is almost as good as its ever been. Well done for that. However, with the seemingly difficult bit done, you continually make errors in areas that you simply shouldn't.
I think that the online revolution of gaming is really where you have made the majority of your mistakes. It seems that you couldn't keep up.
There is no point in me listing the various issues this year as you will have seen the feedback - but to name a few that grind my gears:
- automatic free kicks
- awful 'similar level' matches
- billionaire teams already on MLO (which makes the game mode irrelevant by the way)
- back passing time wasters (I know you can't be held responsible for the behaviour of your consumers, but the engine shouldn't support these people.)
- the out of date rosters (surely this is a 30 minute job for someone to put Van Persie at Man United)
The final straw came today when I am instructed to download Data Pack 2, and the new software... And my game crashes. So I do it again. Crash. I delete all of my data thinking I must have a corrupt file, and finally I get the standard 'apology message' from Konami. How did this happen? Surely your PR guys are sick to death of apologising!?
Anyway... I've never done this before, and do feel fairly geeky, but hey, I just had to vent. Releasing half a product is unacceptable. I don't care what you have planned with your new fox engine next year, because as a company you have embarrassed yourselves and disrespected your loyal consumers.
