I may totally on my own here, and it may be nostalgia creeping in, but one thing that's bugged me about both PES and FIFA in recent years, is the in game atmosphere, or rather the lack of it.
I seem to remember playing ISS Deluxe, and ISS 64 back and the day, and the games being played out in a carnival like atmosphere, along with the over excitable commentary. Yes, it wasn't particularly realistic, but for me it helped me feel immersed in the game, like it was being played out in some parallel universe where football was the be all end all!
Speaking of ISS Deluxe, I also remember if you came from behind to take the lead, they'd show a short animation on the games video score board of your players celebrating, just to put a bit more emphasis on the achievement. Now days, despite all the technological advancements and extra space to put things in the game I don't personally think getting a last minute winner in a 4-3 end to end classic, feels any better than grabbing 3-0 win wrapped up in the first half. It may feel self satisfying knowing what you've just done, but there's little in the game to signify it bar perhaps the odd line of fairly dull commentary. Why can't the crowd cheer louder? The commentators get a bit more excited? The celebrations be a bit wilder? The disappointment of the opposition be even worse?
Even on slightly more recent pro evo games on the ps2, I at least remember there being a hostile home/away crowd option that spiced things up a bit. In recent editions I've always found the atmosphere just feels flat and dull, regardless of what's happening in the game.
As FIFA seems to be leading the way in terms of realism with commentary, full licensing, crowd effects, etc. I've always thought rather than compete, why doesn't PES go in a different direction and go back to being more over the top/fun. Put a more sense of occasion into the game, which, along with gameplay, is what drew me to the earlier ISS games in the first place!
I acknowledge plenty of people long for realism, and although I think most would agree the in game atmosphere is flat, I'm sure the majority would prefer for it to be hyped up but along the lines of realism, rather than hyped up like the ISS games used to be. Either way, I think it's definitely something Konami would do well to put a bit of work into that could put it head and shoulders above FIFA in the satisfaction stakes.
