four man defence vs. three man defence

Which one do u think is better? i personally prefer the 4 man defence as full backs can get up the pitch to attack which adds to the fluidity of the team. What are your ideas?

I always play with 4 backs. Full backs are too important in my opinion. They give a good balance and can be keep pushed back if under pressure or act like wingers in you're attacking.

I prefer 4 at the back for the reasons that CollyT has mentioned, but 3 at the back works quite well too, if you have very fast wingers who can get back and defend.

Thx, I was wondering because my brother always uses a three center back formation and i cant play online. He thinks its better because then you can put more players in midfield or attack and also he thinks that he is defending the most important part of the field; the actual goal. But i think that that will leave your wide positions open and allow cut-ins or crosses.

I like four defence man better because it is easier to defend but if you like attaciking football then it would be better playing 3 in defence

Depends on who I have to work with. If my DMFs are strong and quick enough (or I have a stellar player who can play CWP), I'll space three backs widely enough to handle the flanks when necessary, with said DMFs filling in between the SBs and CB.

The current ML Liverpool I've built is stacked enough to play 3-5-2 with no real issues.

I think four defenders is just right in terms of balance and flexibility.

But, as with any formation, and as The Eristic points out above, you need the players to do it.

My eyes actually literally light up when I see I'm up against a back three...

I usually play with 4 at the back, otherwise opposition teams exploit the wings too much for my liking. In Master League in particular I tend to go for quick full backs who can get forward and help the attack.

I would guess that playing with only 3 at the back will not only leave you vulnerable at the back during open play, it will also leave you even more short-handed at defending corners ...and we all know how people have had problems doing that.

3 at the back never works unless u play with wing backs who support the attack and defence, but then u can end up with playing 5 at the back when defending which can leave u short on the counter attack.
4 at the back is tried and tested, and works really well.

Attack is the best form of defence.
I play a 3-5-2 formation with two very quick cbs on the side of the 3 cbs.A dmf and a cmf and the rest are all out attack and can do as they wish basically.
You just need to have 2 very quick players that can header the ball aswell.
