Instead of adding more specific details to the commentary, I think it would be better to make the commentary more general. In fact, the biggest problem with the commentary is that it tries to be too specific, and those things which are so specific get really tired and unrealistic after you've heard them more than once.
It seems like the more specific the commentary gets, the more comments it makes that are totally wrong. For example, having the commentators make comments about the substitutions seems to work very rarely, most times resulting in a blatantly incorrect statement. Also, talking about the team's coaches doesn't seem to ever work, and ends up being extremely repetitive, especially when they say something like "this team's coach has a superstition and will always be last to come out onto the pitch..." That NEVER works because I hear it using all sorts of teams, and it just ends up seeming really weird!
General comments, no jokes or stories, is all we want, and if anything it would be awesome if the commentators knew what teams were playing!!! I want them to talk about Liverpool and Man U, not coaches and un-named players. So, yes, more specifics are better, but not conditional specifics, rather team and player specifics. Also, talking about cup finals, as if they are important, and who won the first leg in a cup game is great, but keep it simple. They could say what the score is, how much time is left, who is winning, who has more posession, etc, and let us know the aggregate score too...
