Great Championship/Football Manager Matches

Waiting....
I've been playing CM 01/02 (old but great) recently and I'm managing Atalanta. After the first season, I qualified for the UEFA Cup. The first round was a formality against an Israeli team, Beitar Jerusalem. The second round drew up a tougher opponent, Besiktas, but I was still confident of progressing to the third round.

I played the first leg in Istanbul and lost 1-0 to a Halilagic goal. It was a decent game and even throughout. I was confident that I would score at least 2 goals against them, without conceding.

So, I put out a strong team, which included Alex de Souza and Ricardinho, expecting to breeze past the Turks. They scored on 9 minutes, but the goal was quickly cancelled out three minutes later by Rossini. 27 minutes later, we get the second goal thanks to a brilliant individual effort by Orlandini. Now, we just needed the third goal to avoid getting knocked out on the away goals rule, and the goal was duly handed to us thanks to an own goal from their centre-back, Erman, three minutes before half-time.

We go into half-time 3-2 up on aggregate. We just need to make sure we keep hold of the ball and don't let Besiktas score again.

One minute into the second half, my goal keeper, Chiotis, brings down one of their players. He gets sent-off and they score the resulting penalty. FUCK!

Less than 20 minutes later, they score a third to make it 4-3 on aggregate to them, then again on 72 minutes to make it 5-3. My ten men are getting a battering!

I take off Ricardinho after a disappointing game and bring on Pinardi in his place. I also change the shape of my team to 3-4-2, with the centre of the three defenders having an arrow facing up as well as three of the midfielder. I'm going for broke here.

Instant impact! Pinardi scores on 73 minutes, giving my players hope. Nine minutes later, Alex scores a rare headed goal to make it 5-5 on aggregate, but that result favours Besiktas.

My team is really going for it and on the 90th minute, lo and behold, a penalty! This time for us. The circumstance of the penalty mirrored the earlier penalty against us, but this time, they had no goal keeper to bring on, since their number one, Fevzi, was injured earlier on in the game.

Their striker takes the position between the posts.

Alex steps up for the penalty.

Will he score and surely put us through into the third round?

FUCK YES!

6-4 to us on the day and 6-5 on aggregate.

That was the greatest match I've ever experienced on any manager simulation. What was yours?

Dragonfly, you are a true legend. I've also gone back to CM 01/02 and have been playing it a lot. I'll upload pics and describe some of my classic games I've had on my current game when I go on my other computer. I do remember a classic game with Roma where I was 1-0 up against Fiorentina. Taribo West and Cañizares both got sent off in the first half and so I had to bring on my 18 year old French keeper Benoit Andre, whose first job was to face a pen, which he saved. Got to half time 1-0 up, think Montella scored. As I continued the game, both Montella and Guigou also got sent off, but the score stayed at 1-0 with my keeper getting man of the match. :smug:

EDIT: Atalanta have a beast of a team on CM 01/02. I'm in 2009/10 season and they've won Serie A a few times, and as Italy manager I have quite a lot of their players in the squad (rossini, comandini, espinal, rustico etc.)

The most scintillating Championship Manager match I've had is from CM 97/98 (the only one that was better than 01/02) - unsurprisingly, no screenshots. Though I do remember the main talking points of the game.

I was playing as Paris Saint-Germain, and had Oli and Bakayoko up front (anyone who used to play 97/98 will know all about these boys). Champions League final, against Liverpool. Robbie Fowler - who had scored 12 times in 2 previous CL games against some mug team (yes, 6 in each!) - was the main threat, and he chipped in with a goal. A Bakayoko equaliser sent the game into extra time, and eventually, penalties.

It was 4:12AM when the decisive 36th penalty gave me a 13-12 victory, and it was about 4:14AM when my mum came into the room and insulted me in all manner of ways.

Fucking great game.

CL knockout phase in CM 02/03 I believe, AC Milan losing 3-1 at home to Newcastle United with 20 minutes to go. Put my 4-1-2-1-2 to bed and broke out the classic 4-4-2. I ended up winning the match 5-3. Raped everyone in sight for seasons to come after that. My only challenge was Juventus who also used 4-4-2 and got similarly amazing results to myself.

Those were the days.

Leading 1-0 away to dirty Porto at half-time while managing Boavista was a good highlight from CM yesteryear. Shame we lost 4-1 :erm:
