Guide to Patching and Burning WE8:LE on a Mac

Patching on a Mac is a breeze, even less complicated than using a PC.

This tutorial is based on my experience patching WE8:LE with Sunjun and Reefur’s patches and burning the final results on my Powerbook G4 laptop, which thankfully has a DVD burner (I’m using OSX 10.3.9).

Special thanks to billsterno1, Yemi Lawal, eddyedwards, and Alberto Tomba for offering helpful advice regarding patching in general. Thanks also to all the patchers and editors in our community for sharing your work.

Patching and Burning WE8:LE on a Mac (Without Having to Purchase Toast)

1. Insert your original WE8:LE game.

2. Open Disk Utility application. Select WE8:LE. Hit “New Image” icon. You’ll be asked to select a name and destination for the new image.

3. Before creating the new image, go to "Image Format" option and choose “DVD/CD Master”. Leave “none” for encryption option.

4. Create the new image. (WE8:LE image is created in about 12 mins.) This image will have a .cdr extension and, upon completion, should show up on the left-hand side under your HD source info.

5. OPTIONAL: If you want to burn a clean backup copy of your original game, just burn this .cdr image to DVD.

6. You’ll only require one program to patch your game: Gumby 50, which includes “unRAR” and “PPF Patching” functionality. (Currently, Gumby 1.0 Beta 50 by Paradox). Download the program using VersionTracker, MacUpdate, or via Google search, and install.

Update: Get Gumby 50 here:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13964

7. Open Gumby. If your downloaded patch is .rar files, just hit the RAR tab on Gumby and drag your patch folder containing all the .rars inside. Hit the "Process" icon. A PPF file will be created in a few minutes, depending on the size of the patch.

8. Next, hit Gumby’s PPF tab. Drag your .cdr image inside, then drag your PPF file inside. [On the left hand side, DATA: should read your .cdr file name and PPF: should read your PPF file name]. Hit process. Status will say “patching” and your game should be ready in a few minutes.

9. If your patch includes a fix, process the main patch, then, when that's completed, drag the fix PPF file inside and hit process again. Close Gumby when completed.

10. Open Disk Utility again and burn your patched .cdr image to DVD [Your patched image is not re-named in anyway following this process].

Hi Paco de Lucia,
Thank you, i just did it - it was simple!!
Do u know if it is possible for mac users to create/edit patches to add our own music for example?

You only copy the image of the game from your original disk. Then you patch the image on your mac and burn it. Nothing happens to the original disk. And as we all know, you cannot write onto an original disk anyway ;)

Zygalski, the link you included is for Gumby 48, a previous version. The most current version is Gumby 49. I'll search and include a link in my guide or in this thread later today.

Jimmyjazz, patching does not affect your original game in any way, as Zygalski reported. The process really is super-simple, so give it a try once you have game in hand. You'll never want to play an un-patched version of the game again!

rofrof, I've heard that actually editing (rather than just applying patches) on a Mac ain't that easy -- just not enough tools available. If you find a way to do it, please report here. I'd love to do this in the future. Right now, I was happy enough just to apply a patch on my trusty Mac!

Jimmyjazz, I use swap magic DVD with fliptop to play the patched game.

Finally, if anyone has additional insights/tips re: Mac patching, share your knowledge. Would love to see more Mac patchers in general.

For those of you using Toast, a tutorial would be helpful, as well.

Happy playing!

1. I've added a new Gumby 49 download link in my guide above.

2. I've been asked whether PES4 can be patched on a Mac in the same way. Provided you're using a PES4 patch, the process outlined in the guide above is the same.

However, I myself haven't burned and patched a PES4 .cdr image, so I'm unable to confirm this 100 percent -- if someone can confirm creating a patched (and bootable!) PES4 using this process, please add to the discussion.

The game is available on PS2, xbox and pc.
I'm not sure if you could get the pc version to run on a max with an emulator but I doubt it.

Try a ps2 lens cleaner. or use a vacuum on the back vents of the ps2 to get rid of dust.

Calling patched PES4 like PES5 is a bit much, in my opinion.
WE8:LE is a far better game and imagine when WE8:LE is patched - it's still only PES4.5!
So a patched PES4 is PES4.25 for me ;)

i have patched winning eleven liveware with the reefur patch and as you say it is like pes 4 . 5 as the gameplay will be done again, its weird how the measure the change. its still amazing though i think i got carried away with the excitement that it actually worked (although not yet on my ps2 lol).

i can't wait til we start to patch pes 5 lol

You'll likely be able to patch PES5 a month or two in advance of the game's release (by patching WE9 after its release in August) ;)

Er No.
The patch has to be made for the game. A WE9 patch will not work on PES5.

Correct. I only meant no need to wait and patch PES5 in November/Dec, when one can patch WE9 in August/Sept. (with WE9 patch of course).

Further, in Nov./Dec. many of us likely will be checkin out Xbox2 and wishing we could play the series on next gen consoles.

It could be like that.
Or konami may put in new encryptions so that kits can't be added until someone decrypts the new game. Hopefully that won't be the case.
