'lo, all.
I'm Andrew, a games programmer (not anything you've heard of yet, but I work for David Braben, Beeb fans) from Wales, now in Cambrdige.
Originally played PES1 on ps2, had PES3 on ps2 for a few months now. Into my 6th season of ML, 4*, 15min matches, champions for 4 consecutive seasons. Boosted into 4* last season, actually had my most 'fun' season. Only won from Ars*nal on the last day, 1pt difference ('thou I had massive GD).
Play as PES United, remodelled to Cardiff City. Current team (4-1-2-1-2):
gk: Buffon (signed on free while in 2nd div) [sub: Carini, who?]
Wing backs: Rob Carlos and Codolona (sp again?), [boris, gerrard]
centre backs: desaily, campbell [terry, moko-sumit]
DMF: Vieira [gerrard]
wing mids: rivaldo, becks [scholes, dyer]
off mid: orgeta (another free, was unemployed) [dyer, giggs]
strikers: henry, liniker (classic) [best (classic), giggs, ortega]
Thoughts on the game:
everything is fan-bloody-tastic, but for:
offensive running - seen strikers move behind my running midfielder rather than move into space for a through ball. Grr!
unfair cpu moves - maybe I just don't know the moves, but seen opposition defenders steal the ball from behind, etc. frustrating in injury time of a draw.
digital/analouge swapping - run with the 'stick, then swap to the d-pad for shooting, what's that about?
ageing players, or lack of - Options say something about retired players, but I've had a 29 year old Ortega for 6 seasons. Would add to feeling of a football 'dynasty' if I could slowly faze him out for an improving Dyer. Understand memory contraints of saving all the players' decreasing stats on a ps2 mem card. But still. Maybe function worked out on fly from season count, player age at start. Predictably decrease stats, always have grey arrows, etc.
Keepers running out for ball - they always make it! Why didn't they have a tiny random variable (linked to keeper skill or summit), which made them make mistakes sometimes?
Charlton (classic) - had him for a few seasons, but, dispite his stats, couldn't displace scholes or ortega. Let him and Freddie L go for Becks and Dyer.
I do like the atmosphere that's built up around my ML. My team has the spine of Arsenal ripped out, but they've recovered to challenge. Celtic have also grown, while losing giggs and scholes from United have sent them to the bottom of the 2nd. 'Pool, Leeds, Newcastle, constantly mid-table.
Enjoying ML so much still haven't played any cup mode. Maybe I'll restart the ML soon, build up another team, but the goals can be so beautiful from this team. Becks smashing them from outside the box, riv's great crosses, carlos' searing runs, not to mention Henry's pace and composure. Have a play where the CFs run at the defenders, split off to the wings, suddenly turn and lay a ball into the centre of the box, where my attacking mid (Ortega) runs onto it and smashes it past a diving keeper. Woo, and ah hoo!
What else to say? I play wide, out as far as poss., and I sit about a foot from the 21' screen...
tha...tha...that's all folks.
Cheers,
Andrew
