how to prevent goals from crosses?

every single goal my human opponents score is volley or header from the cross.

in EVERY SINGLE GAME i play with my buddies.. i totally dominate the game.. they cant do anything.. i have like 50 chances... then out of nothing.. desperation cross from my opponent - my five players in defence just stand there.. and his one player scores... every single time..
cross from half the pitch.. BOOM GOAL... cross from corner line.. BOOM GOAL... whats up with that.. this is somehow realistic?? in real life football.. fuck... probably one out of 50 crosses is a goal.. in this game its the reverse...

i am really pissed... what am i doing wrong..

man mark their wingers, play back more so they dont get the room to run down the side and cross, preventing the cross from happening is your best bet because once its in the air all bets are off as to where it will land for that monster diving header. Also if you play back more your CBs will be in the area to most of the time head the ball out. But my best advise is to stop the sideline runs by playing back, man marking and bringing a 2nd defender to crowd the crosser.

The majority of my goals I concede come from crosses too. Randomally strikers like Andy Johnson and Michael Owen will out jump the likes of Puyol and Vidic etc. Can understand it on the odd occasion but not nearly every bloody time! :(

iamcanadianeh, we play on "top player" always.

i dont see how it is possible to actually stop the cross... one can fire the cross from any position he wants.. i will try puting my defense closer to my goal..

if i remember corectly this cross-and-goal silliness started way back in fifa 1996..
i understand gamers love the dynamic and fast attacking games and all that.. but damn.. this cross+goal thing is driving me insane.. 4 defenders.. one attacker.. cross.. BOOM.. goal..

use 4 defenders instead of 3 and run always with your defender when the cross iis made, mark as a beast, i prefer a foul from the side that a cross from a run from ashley cole or fuck any one.

It's strange because I've just conceived few goals that way. Of course I recognize that crossing and heading is one of the most effective ways of scoring (I use it always I can - I must confess).

Observation: against COM I always play on Top Player.

I will explain what I do to avoid it. It's not something new (I've used this system since ... PES 6 I guess) and it doesn't work for everybody. I have friends who use other type of defence and they do pretty well.

First of all, my defensive strategy is set in 1 and I need at least one DMF in my team to cover the defence properly (I've tried my midfield with 2 CMFs and it didn't work well :().

Now, we have basically 3 situations:

1) Early-cross: when the opponent crosses after the midline.
2) Crossing from deep wing with cover: when the opponent gets the deep wing (next to my box), but I have a defender marking the crosser.
3) Crossing from deep wing without cover: the same situation above, but this time my defender didn't have time to get closer in order to block the crossing.

What I do:

Situation 1: offside trap. It works like a charm. You need to check the map all the time. It may sound difficult, but it isn't at all.

Situation 2: I run with my defender side by side with the opponent while I press :square: to make pressure. This will bring another defender to help me. Warning: I do not try to tackle the opponent. I just close the spaces while my other defender comes. When my other defender gets close, I switch the control (with :L1:) and now my defender who is in combat with the opponent is COM-controlled and I have the control of the second. I keep the pressure with :square: and if the opponent gets through my first defender, he will not scape from me doing the covering. It works almost 100% of the time against COM and it's very effective against human.

Situation 3: that's more difficult because you probably won't be able to avoid the cross. In this situation, I take the control of my closer defender and run until the border of the box (I don't press :square: here). Then I switch to another defender, I start to press :square: at the same time that I place my controlled defender in front of the possible header. So, in this situation, my first defender now is COM-controlled and trying to block the cross and my second (under my control) is trying to clear the ball always a bit before the attacker. This way, I can prevent very effectively the goal. It's not as easy as the situations 1 and 2, but it is playable for sure. You need to be fast and predict where the cross will go.

So, that's my system. I am not a great player, but it works very well for me.

Have you applied all of the updates? Go to system/download, and make sure you have all three checked off. You have to do this yourself, the game won't prompt you.

The 1.03 update made a huge improvement to this problem IMO. The reason I asked about the difficulty is that on regular/professional the headed goals are still too easy (my problem is more the fact that they are too easy to score for me than about conceding them).

If you're having a big problem still, maybe make absolutely sure the patches are applied (re-apply if needed) and that when playing against your mates that the difficulty really is set for top player (double check to be sure, some people don't think that difficulty against human opponents changes anything, but trust me it does).

If this still doesn't work, I can try to see what I can drum up in terms of gamplay advice.

A few suggestions:

1. Set both of your CBs to play defensively.
2. When retreating on defense take control of a defensive midfielder or CM and get him back into a defensive position.
3. When defending down the flanks try to block the passes by holding R2 when controlling your player.
4. Once a cross has been made do absolutely everything you can to challenge the pass, because when you get a good challenge it lowers the accuracy of the header.
5. If your defender in the middle looks like he won't be able to challenge because he's stuck in an animation, tap R2 so you can take full control of him and not be at the mercy of a predetermined animation. However, be aware this is a very tricky maneuver and can sometimes take your player out of position even more, so tapping R2 must be done early on so you can get him in good position.

I think I'm pretty good with defending crosses and headers. What I normally do is hold SQUARE when you want to head the ball out. As soon as you hit square your player will jump (you probably won't see this) but as soon as you hit SQUARE move your analog pad to left side. This has been working for me like a charm.
