Inserting Edited Players into Club Teams?

I'm having no luck placing a created player into a club side in the edit mode so that he's always available to use. I can insert a created player into the national squads but not in a club. What am I doing wrong? The instruction manuel just says register them and that's it, but when I go to register I can only insert players that I unlock through the WE Shop? Maybe I'm just missing something. Thanks guys.
