Unfortunately I don't know how to make background colours transparent on pngs for kits (I only have irfan view and gimp) so i have been using ones similar to my avatar.
Unfortunately when i import the file and stretch the kit marking on to the shirt the badge and sponsor become pixelated and it's hard to blend the colours with the shirt.
What is the optimum pixel size? These ones are 220 x 220

to answer your question.
the optimal size which is mostly used is 142 x 253.
and if you have problems making things transparent i would say you should definitely use paint.net for a that. it´s a free program. there you can make stuff transparent very easy by using one easy to handle tool. you can also use transparent version of all colours
