I have been playing PES 2009 on PS3 and have (like others) been frustrated by the AI biassed "cheating" and horrific defending that has lost me many a match. With previous versions of PES I have not been able to put the controller down. With the unsubtle scripting and frustrating errors of this game, I have wanted to fly to Japan and smash my controller into the face of the Konami programmers.
I have been noticing 'differences' in gameplay with regards to speed and obviousness of AI cheating since I bought the game in October 2008. With each new download (v 1.1, to 1.4 etc) I have noticed tweaks. Some tweaks have made the scripting less obvious and I have enjoyed this and then suddenly it's back! It was almost like with a new version download/update, it was a slightly different game. Clearly I was imagining it - or was I?
I played PES at a friends house just after version 1.3 and his game was different to mine. Faster and more arcade like. He laughed, said I was paranoid and beat me 3-1!. He then came to mine and was shocked that his game was so different to mine.So we got thinking. We took my disc and his disc to a friend's who doesn't like football games and popped PES in. Both my disc and my friend's disc played the same on my other mate's PS3. So what could be causing these differences?
My non football loving friend said "It's obvious. Konami are altering the game via the internet". Basically he said, if your internet is enabled Konami can do and change what the hell they like in your game and files etc. After some research we found out that on the PC in PES 2008, some editor guys had created add boards to replace Vodafone ones. These worked for a few days and then they reverted back to the default boards? The only way to get the edited boards back was to disconnect from the internet.
Shocked that Konami could alter such things I e-mailed them and asked about my different game experiences etc and were they affecting this on line AND was this basically like there are 3 or 4 versions of PES 2009.
RESPONSE:
"KONAMI reserve the right to change aspects and fundamental programming within the game via the internet. Such updates not only include up to date transfers and kit designs, but may also include game play enhancements. If a user should so decide and not enable internet connection, in essence can experience a different gaming experience. This may go some way to explain your game speed issues and varying levels of difficulty".
They went on to say:
"It is not inconceivable that with four different updates and four different gaming consoles that a user may experience different game play".
I have paid nearly £40 for a game I liked, just to have it changed considerably with every update? It's basically like they're saying there are 4 different games!!! I liked the game after 1.2 update and don't want it tweaked because I have internet enabled or because I in all good faith downloaded V 1.3 and 1.4. Is this even legal???
I have asked for my £40 back.
