Making the 3-5-2 Air Tight? Help Needed

Hello, im currently participating in a league with a few mates where we are using Premier League teams who are a challenge. I chose Crystal Palace, and i am currently 3 points ahead with only 4 games to go.

Now i have been using a 4-4-2 for the whole of the league, but after reading many threads, the 3-5-2 has recieved great praise.

I feel if i can make a 3-5-2 as sound as it possibly can, i could win the league, but at the moment, my 4-4-2 is starting to be a bit unstable, especially against my mate who is Everton (Bent and Rooney!!!)

If you have any basic tips on how to make 3-5-2 a solid formation then they would be appreciated

P.s. when i say 3-5-2, i mean with to defensive midfielders

Cheers

Hi John!

Firstly, congrats on a superb choice of team, the Eagles are head and shoulders above the likes of Everton anyway.

Secondly, a lot of it depends on how you play. The reason people use a 3-5-2 is to dominate in midfield, so plenty of careful passing and creating your own openings will depend on how you use your midfield.
I would concede only about 8-10 goals a season using a 3-5-2 (although with 2 OMFs) so with two DMFs you should be better off.
Next you need to adjust your attack and defence arrows. This is all down to preference but I prefer my strikers to have a low defence and the defenders to have a high defence, with the midfield using a normal defence. (If you dont know how to do this go into your formation -> Individual -> Defence.)
Similarly you need to sort out your attack arrows. It's up to you whether you want your defenders to move or not, but they can be more solid with balanced attack arrows ( e.g <- and ->) You may also wish to give your RB and LB attacking arrows going forward to give you that extra attacking option. Have your SMFs run wide and forward, your OMF straight ahead and your strikers forward and in towards the goal. Once this is sorted you should be able to dominate more.
(Again to change attacking options go Formation -> Individual -> Attack)

Hope that helps. :)

I also play with 3-5-2 tactic with germany, and so far so good. the tricks is to have your centre DC as sweeper (I prefer the tallest or with higher heading ability). This can be set by choosing team---> defence style---->sweeper.
For your defensive midfielders set the mark setting to "covering".
That is it, you have balance in both defence and attack.

I personally don't like the 3-5-2 formation. I find i get caught out at the back with only 3 CBs. On my masterleague i play with a 4-3-3 formation, but i certainly wouldn't recommend that as with an average team like Palace, it wouldnt work.

But if youre gonna use it, I'd say make sure your DMF are always in place and guarding the defence well. Plus your OMF always helping the attackers out. Like Stevie said, midfield is key in a 3-5-2.

Cheers lads

Cracky, i know what you meant about being vunerable at the back, but its usually because of a good through ball which cant be helped
