I can only manual pass in 4 directions. When I try to pass diagonally it just goes in a straight line. Anyone having this problem or is this just the way its meant to be?

That's the way it's supposed to be. Konami are catering to the casual football fan with assisted passing.

Manual passing is not total freedom. It's I believe 16 directions in total.
All I can say is do not expect 360 degree freedom. But you can get better at it by doing some training.:)
