Max Drive/ X-port (saving music on xbox)

I am deciding whether to buy an xport or max drive on xbox so i can download files, but is it possible on either of them to download files containing music to play on the xbox? most of my cd collection are what ive burned off the computer and pirate copies so i can't put most of my songs on my xbox. So, i wondered if there is any chance of downloading files using a max drive/x-port that contains music to play on the xbox.

Max Drive will transfer option files to your mem card. Do songs play from mem cards?

Songs on the xbox are stored on its hard drive, you have to save the songs you want off the cd. I just wanted to know if its possible to acquire files that have songs on them so they can play in the background during some games.
