Offense-Arrows

Despite playing the game for about a year, I am still puzzled over the Offense arrows. For each player except the keeper, we can pre-fixed two directions out of a possible eight. What does these arrows represent and how it affects the players?

it tells the players which direction they should run in offense.. i.e. if u want SMf's to come into the centre and and help out there.. then put and arrow diagonally up/down and right... etc..

i have my two wing backs set with the offense arrow pointing away from the goal. this means they get forward more and put in more crosses etc.
