Just got the sack after 6 seasons in Div.2. I was playing on 3* setting only. Best position was 7th, all other seasons came bottom. Second season I went all league games with 0 goals! I even won a game in first season, so how I managed that I don't know.

Just finished my first season in my new game, but had to drop to 2* setting. Please don't laugh :(

Came 4th in league and lost Div.2 final in extra time. At least I'm scoring more goals. Still can't get more than 3 in a game though. (10 minute matches)

But I did manage this with the original squad (no tranfers in or out) and the default tactics. So now I have some points to spend in season 2. It's still complete toilet though isn't it?

hmmmmmmm i spose you are doing kinda dodgey for how long you've had it but atleast you'll get betta from playin on 2* :)
did you decide tha you got sacked for not winning anythin... for why it said game over!! No 1 knew why... untill now :(
well once you get going im sure things will start shapin up... if they really do get tha bad then you could always go down to 1*... they just stand there i hear... dont worry mate, you'll soon have tha best team before you know it :)

Thanks for the encouragement. The thing is, on the harder levels you appreciate the goals more. My best game was when I came back from 2-0 down to draw with West Ham 2-2 (on 3* setting)

Sent a player through with a one two, did a step over, then a shot feint with square and X, rounded the keeper and slotted into the empty net. I was punching the air in front of the screen. GET IN THERE!!!!

I've noticed on 2* and 3* setting that the CPU teams are total pants at free kicks. They've hardly ever got one on target, never mind scored. I'd hack my way to success if the refs weren't so strict!

Keep at it mate. Keep playing on a certain difficulty until it becomes too easy. Once you master 2* and win Div 1, move on to 3*.

Try and find out the better cheap players and go for them. In your first season, you should go for a keeper, CF and one mid and one defender if possible.
Keep checking the transfer market for players on 0-1 years left on their contract as you'll get them for free for the start of the next season. You could even get Henry on a free using this method. So keep an eye on those short-contract players and make suitable bids for them. Or go for international players who don't have a club.

Good luck :)

Leedsfan,

Great post. I'm here mostly to pick up tips and move up from intermediate 3* levels. Given your transfer policy and not cheating by restarting games, your results were okay.

I used 2* for a season to pick up the game, try to use the space available in those games to learn the moves and accumalate points for transfers. Then moved up to 3* later in Div 1.

When I was winning consistently there, and I no longer had the default squad you kept faith in, I switched to 4*, and the next season to 5*. I had a good run of games then got hammered repeatedly when WEFA Cup opponents were soaking up my pedestrian attacks and beating me on the break - so I've switched back down again to try and work on my finishing and creativity in possession.

The differences in the COM's gameplay at different levels are really good, you see the COM starting to move the ball around more intelligently, making better runs, one-touch passing and little flicks, then punishing my own slack passing in front of defence.

Do take advantage of Free Agent transfers, as Zyg advises above.

I'd also look at applying some strategies that work for the default squad. I used 3-5-2 with one DMF having his Mark Settings on CV (e.g. Harty) - covering his space on the pitch rather than getting sucked too far out of position. For the other, I set his Attack arrows forward to use him as my main link between defence and attack.

The SMF had Attack arrows both up and down the wings, and two CF's had one lateral, to send them running along the defensive line while staying on-side, and the other to drop deep and receive the ball to feet.

All the rest of the 5* experts should have lots of good advice on that score...I'm looking forward to it:
What are the best tactics to use with the default squad, and what are the most effective techniques to get a result with average players? (not much point in relying on bicycle kicks!).

A lot of my goals with the default team came from using Cellini as my playmaker in either DMF or OMF, sliding straight passes in for Huygens and Ostwaut to run on to, usually knocking it past the COM's GK as he rushes out.

One thing worth working on is Corners, especially because you can use your SMF's to play for them during a game when the CF aren't available for a cross in open play.

Try using a Left footer on the right (and a rightie on the left), an in-swinger (about half power on O, with the Left between north and north-east) between the 6 yard box and near post will often get you a free header and goal opportunity. Try not to snatch at it by pressing [] too early.

Applying pressure on the COM's defence should force a few chances, and with 5 in midfield and maybe using Line Defence you may be able to press the COM team back into their own half for long periods, tiring their players while you look for an opportunity - don't try to go for gaps that aren't there, try to be patient and keep the attack going.

Good Luck.

as the above post says try to be patient. Keep passing it and keeping the ball. Passing back and across to open up space in front of you is useful. Practice on short sharp PRECISION passing.

I find its better not to get sucked into passing and building attacks slowly but to keep the ball moving. When you try and play a really slow passing game i find that the COM team just gets 2 banks of 4 players behind the ball.

Practice stuff such as 1-2 passing (L1+X) and also for when you have a 2 on 1 situation with a defender (L1+O). This provides a chipped return pass which can cut out the defender and leave a striker through on goal! Also when using L1+X don't always pass to the player that made the pass. This can unsettle defenders as players make different runs.

Also try and get crosses in whenever possible.

Hope this helps!

Leedsfan...

Sounds like you have a lot of technique to call on (all those 'lollipops', to quote Big Ron), so it's hard to imagine why you aren't geting the results you want.

For the default team, my top defensive tip would be 'don't dive in'. It's amazing how many times you can turn the COM attacks around and have 'em play all the way back into their own half... all with a bit of good L1ing and a bit o' jockying. Don't get fixated on one defender, coz if you do the players you aren't controlling get pulled out of position (or just wander off like they've remembered they've left the oven on). Tease an' tickle you're defence around and stand up strong. With practice, you will start to reduce the number of byline-crosses (default defenders are pants in the air) and will notice that the COM starts crossing from much deeper (giving a lot of off-sides) or taking frustrated pot shots from well outside the box (yet another one in row Z!). Having a semi-auto/manual stategy that utilises Zone Press & Offside Trap helps this system a lot.

My top default attacking tip (3-5-2) would be 'avoid the temptation to play Minanda off the front two' ~ in PES3 he's a bloomin' disaster (like... I've seen milk turn faster). Play Costollo in the OMF slot with Huylans & Barota up front (when possible) and let Costollo shoot on sight... the other FWs will mop up a lot of rebounds! Play Minada as a sub for him or wide right (I know Barota will break your heart too, but he doesn't cost you 540+ pts like Minanda ~ Minanda is the Houllier signing of the default team!).

Anyroadup... good luck :)

i think the key is defense. i don't score a lot but by allowing around half a goal per match i won the ML on level4 - my biggest sucess so far. i suggest you to use 3 central defenders and 2 defensive midfielder, in this aspect the starting strategy is o.k. with the initial players i hardly play any long passes. i also think that it's a good idea to sacrifice the OM and put in a WF, that "burchet" (or how he is called) is o.k., play with Huylens CF and Costello (or how the f*** he is called) CF but on either side and a bit back. i also have my SMFs rather defensive, the 3 forwards should help you get into it. i also suggest to make your first signing a technical defender.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm just gonna start season 2 and I'm going to stay on the 2* level until I get promoted. Then I'll increase this to 3* level so that I get a realistic challenge for stepping up a division.

I don't get my ass kicked on 2* though. I did lose a few games but nothing really bad. I know what you mean about "tickling" with your defenders. I learned this lesson pretty quickly.

Because I have all my original squad I'm still gonna buy no more players this season. But I will sell 3 or 4 to get even more points. Then I'll go on a spending spree for season 3. If I do go up this season then season 3 will be a "staying up" job, especially on 3*.

I've spent a lot of time in the training sessions, practicing the one-twos and shooting. I never did get the hang of L1+X and then "triangle" or "O" for a quick return. I did a few one-twos by pressing X then making him sprint on, then passing back to the original player by pressing X again. Not the best way though.

It's definitely my attacking that needs improvement. My goals agianst record at the end of the season was very good. If I can just get it right in the last 3rd of the pitch......

Leedsfan,

Changing your camera angle might influence how you play in possession:

Like kjp says,

"Practice on short sharp PRECISION passing."

Yesterday I was getting annoyed at my gameplay, so thinking of that advice, I switiched the Camera angle from Default Long to Default Intermediate...it helped me to get a better view of how my players were moving with the ball, and forced me to concentrate on close control and short passing.

It also helped me to improve my results.

It might be worth a try?

Just played my first 3 games in Div.2....

1-1 v Leicester
5-0 v Benfica (2 headers from Barota in first 7 mins!)
3-1 v Man.City

I'm getting the hang of it now. I could have scored quite a few more goals as I missed loads of 1 on 1 chances 'cos I was trying different chip shots and low lobs. On 2* I get the chance to try these out. On 3* I was snatching at everything. I didn't think that lowering the skill level would actually help. I thought that playing on a high(ish) setting to start with could only help my game. I was so wrong!

Someone earlier said something about snatching at headers. That's exactly what I was doing before. Now I wait for the moment before I press []. I couldn't score a header to save my life before!

And I still haven't made any new signings, but Harty has been sold.

Regarding the camera angle.... I always play on "wide". I get to see more of the pitch than on any other camera. The players aren't as detailed, but it suits me fine as I can see the runners.
