This is something I have noticed more and more recently and wondered if anyone else thinks the same.
Whilst getting used to this new instalment my online rank was a bit hit and miss ranging from 430ish to 580ish. I suffered with laggy opponents, game freeze at the stadium entrance, silly mistakes etc that all contributed to my rank going up and down like a yo yo.
Im a bit more picky about who I play regarding their connection status so have thankfully reached a stage were almost every game is lag free.
I haven’t suffered from game freeze at the stadium entrance for weeks and concentrate better so the silly mistakes have gone!
(On a side note – I noticed that my first game online each session after the ps3 was switched on resulted in the stadium entrance freeze if I had created the match room – now for my first game I always enter someone elses room first and the problem is gone – coincidence?)
Anyway, now I thought id get a truer reflection on my rank.
On to the point – when my rank is say 550 and I play someone who is ranked less than 500 points 90% of the time the game follows the same pattern.
I will dominate possession, create plenty of chances, miss a couple that I would normally bury and / or their keeper will play like superman. They may create 1 or 2 chances but generally im in charge.
At some point they will get a breakaway and a lofted or through ball will resulted in either a mix up in my defence / keeper spillage / wonder strike from the fullback from an impossible angle and bang – 1 nil down and defeat on its way. I have lost count of the number of times I have muttered “you jammy b******” in these games.
On the other side – if my rank is 550 and im playing someone ranked 600+ then 90% of the time the roles are reversed. Im the guy under the cosh, my keeper is superman and they are squandering chances, I get the breakaway and I can almost predict the moment I will score – I can just “feel” it coming and am generally right.
More often than not im almost apologetic for the win as it wasn’t a reflection of the game. (I can hear them muttering “you jammy b******”)
The best games are the ones when im playing someone of similar rank whether that be 450, 500 or 550.
So the question is – is there some kind of “underdog balancing” going on online or is all this in my head?
I have played over 300 games online and am convinced this happens.
I don’t want to restrict the games I play to people of similar rank, I believe if you open a room you should play whoever comes in and not cherry pick your opponents but if I constantly feel like the gods are against me when I play “lesser” opponents then im clearly not going to bother!
