PC Action Pes 2009 PC Review - 9/10

GAME SCORE : 9/10

PES 2009 is the third chapter of next generation football from Konami and you can see that at first sight. The improved graphics feature nice wrinkles at shirts and shorts, outstanding player faces and even more smooth animations. But such details can't be enough for a new PES update, so this year's version presents the Champions League licence. On top of the main menu, the new mode gives the player the opportunity to experience Europe's premier competition with all it's teams and venues.

That‘s what you would think when you purchase the "official product" of the Champions League. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Especially German players will be disappointed to see that there is no club from the Bundesliga included. There are even more teams missing such as Famagusta from Cyprus, Denmark's Aalborg and BATE Borisov from Belarus. These are no European top clubs of course, but the fact that you can't compete with this year's accurate starting field gives the CL mode a negative connotation. Furthermore, Konami has lost the licence for Spain's Primera Division. Even though the biggest clubs like Barca and Real are still completely authentic, Champions League competitor Atletico Madrid is called "MAD ROJO/BLANCO" for example. One step forward, two steps back regarding the licences.

Concerning the gameplay, PES 2009 is slower and more tactical than it's predecessor, reminding of PES 5. Stars like Torres, Messi and Henry are quick, but not that superior as in PES 2008. But sometimes they stumble through the center backs with the ball on their feet, which is very annoying. A positive aspect is the improved AI. The opponent passes the ball more cleverly and defends well.

The new mode named "Become a Legend", in which you control only one player, is very frustrating at first. As a young talent you start your career by impressing your manager at training matches. But after more than six matches on the training ground you want more action. When you have patience, you will finally arrive at the bench and you'll get more and more appearances for the team. Then it becomes very satisfying to see your player developing and scoring goals in third person perspective. You even get offers from bigger clubs when you're good enough. "Become a Legend" can not compete with the presentation of FIFA's "Be a Pro", but the gameplay is more fluid than EA's counterpart. You should consider this new mode as a entertaining alternative to the Master League.

As a conclusion, PES 2009 is how PES 2008 should have been, although the differences between the two games are not overwhelming. Anyway, there is no better football game for PC, period.
