PES2008 review for Playstation 2

Just a small review on the game:

1) Editing mode. Nothing has changed from PES6. IDENTICAL to PES6

2) Licenses. Premier League is there, only Spurs and Newcastle are licensed. You can edit everything though, including the team emblems.
Bundesliga is missing. There is a blank league where you can create the teams. Bayern Munich is included in one of the "other teams" sections
3) New faces. I noticed Konami have created the faces of some players previously not included. For example Eboue of Arsenal, Tim Cahill of Everton now have built in faces.

4)Gameplay. controls are exactly the same as PES6. There are NO new dribbling styles, NO dive button. Everything is done in the same way as in PES6 with the only noticeable differences being the running and dribbling animation who are just a bit different to watch this time.

5)Response. I can clearly feel that the controls do not respond as fast as in PES6. When I'm trying to dribble or change direction I cannot get a "real time" response and that leads to giving away posession.

6) Scoring. Same type of shots, same 2 lobbing styles. No difference here either.

7) Forward runs. I think that more players tend to make runs and follow in attack.

8) Commentary. Improved but a bit boring.

9) Menus and music. The start menu can only allow one mode to be seen and not all options. The sound effects are extremely annoying when you browse through the menus. The menus are a bit different to those in PES6.
Teams and player names are shown in capital letters which is VERY ANNOYING. I'll personally rename every player. For example SALIHAMIDZIC to Salihamidzic.
The arrows (red, blue, yellow) that show the condition of each player are blurry and hard to look at.

OVERALL: Same game as last year's with a different case cover, with the controls not responding as good as before. Worse in every aspect.
I feel I was robbed as I spent 30 pounds on this crap. Dissapointing
Save money and buy a PS3 -NEXT YEAR. I'm already waiting for PES2009 to come out.

Good honest feedback TS. It's hard to find a review seeing how obscure the ps2 version is.

To one of the posters: the ML now has a neat new outlook.. and looks abit like a football manager screen i guese. Players now have points and popularity rating. from which i think is identical to the ps3 version.

IMHO, the controls are more fluid and the AI is somewhat more realistic. The computers over the top speed, body balance and pushovers are hardly apparent compared to the last. This makes for more realistic gameplay VS comps.

Apart from that, nothing much have changed. Keepers on the other hand are better and tend to push the ball away for a corner.

Pes6 patched / PES 2007 Patched > PES 2008 unpatched.
I guese it will be more enjoyable once the game is patched with official kits and stuffs.

One more thing i noticed is that weaker teams have more capability to put on a challenge VS stronger teams. Weaker players have more ball control now and it really depends on how good you are at ball control in comparison to the players stats. The animation for moving left or right when turning now has the r2 animation .. well kinda.

The ref also blows for a foul if someone fouls your keeper such as pushing him off balance. That's really cool! Cheers

totally agree with the review having played the game myself I have to say i was disapointed. at least konami could have put the new skill and diving in the game their not complicated animations and it would have made the game just that little bit different and the lack of editable boots is just shocking you can change the colours thats it.

Thanks for the info, all of you. Will be another year of PS2 for me - can't afford the PS3 yet - so it was nice to get some info on the PS2 version. Good to know you can edit the emblems, tho', since it seems it can't be done on the next gen (bar patches for the PC-version), but the control bit is worrying since I thoght it could have been done a little better on Pes6. Hopefully it will prove a good enough challenge until Pes 2009, by which time I'll own a PS3, fingers crossed :)

Brillaint review vagorillas!!
I'm one of the poor people who hasnt got a PS3 yet so i am really looking forwards to the ps2 PES2008
I'll be honest as much as i loved the review it wont stop me buying the game
After reading all the previews of pro-evo i never really had high expectations for the PS2 version, but the little touches they have done sound class
Unfortunately i have no idea how to patch so i'm looking forwards to an option file coming out

yes, is it worth getting it if you are too skint to have a ps3?
i say yes the game play has improved and the commentary is much much better. there is now a scenario mode which will keep you entertained and you also have the ability to edit. the graphics haven't changed at all from pes 6 but the game play has and i think its better as its more realistic. so i say go buy it, with new modes and game play it will keep you entertained.
