PES2009 PC - Joystick Problem

I have a "Microsoft Sidewinder" joystick, everytime I try and play the game all the players can do is kick the ball the opposite way.
If I change some of the controller settings, it crashes the game leaving me with a black-box on the screen.
Is there a way to corporate the joystick in to the game or are there joysticks available that are compatible?

try to unplug the controller (when the game isn't running) and plug it back in. Sometimes that does the trick

Thanks for the tip, but I still have the problem of players passing and shooting backwards.
Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a pad to play the game, it's a shame as the joystick is a joy to use and have no problem with any other game I play including FIFA09.

After buying a lot of "generic" joystick that doesn't work well I decided to buy the Microsoft X-box Joystick for Windows, I have two, one wireless and a regular one, now I have a couple of reliable joysticks! I paid 50 euros for the wireless and 25 euros for the regular, I live in Bologna. You should try it! I hope that helps. Ciao!

Thanks for that, I'll see if I can find them here in England.
But, I have now solved the problem with the Sidewinder Joystick.

The joystick is mainly used for flight-sims, it has a rudder on the base to the left of the stick. The players were kicking the ball backwards when the rudder was pushed forward, I have always had it in this position, playing all games with no problem.

Last night I tried different settings, still the same problem. I moved the rudder so it was central and pointing upwards, now the game plays with no problem. Weird.

But hey, I can play the game now. Lovin' it.
Considering I have all the FIFA games from when it started, I'm getting addicted to PES . . . Let the fun begin!!
