PESGaming Games of The Generation - Nomination Thread

Yes with an amazing banner that took all of 30 seconds to make, I welcome you all to the PESGaming Game of The Generation thread.

Following the Wii U last November, the PS4 and Xbox One will be ushering in the new generation of home consoles when they launch in the UK within a week of each other next month. The Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii have brought countless amazing titles to the table, and having owned all three at one point or another I have been fortunate to experience a lot of these. I think now would be a good time to look back at all the great titles we have wasted many an hour playing and decide what are the best games of the generation, and what title should be our GOTG.

Personally for me this generation has been fantastic, ushered in with my purchase of a Wii in 2006, followed by a 360 in 2008 and my PS3 in 2009. Looking at my trophy list alone I have played 85+ games on the PS3, and that means this is the most amount of games I have played in any generation.

Set-Up and The Rules
(these can be amended if enough people voice concern or a suggestion how to better it pops up)

Now rather than list every title that has been released this generation, I’d like to invite members to post five games they have played that released this generation be they from the PSP, DS, Wii, 360. PS3 or PC (click here for a more detailed look in to what constitutes this gen). This posting period will be open for two weeks. At the end of this period I will collate the top 5 games by mention and open a poll where Users can then vote once to determine what title will be crowned the PESGaming Game of The Generation

  • Game must have been released on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP or DS
  • If a PC game then the title must have been released between the launch of the Xbox 360 and now
  • Game cannot be a HD re-release of a previous generation title
  • Game must have received a retail release

Running alongside this I thought people might want to also vote for the best Indie Game/Digital/HD Port of the generation. Due to the fact some people may not have experienced any of these, I’m unsure if the numbers will be there but if you would like to suggest three titles that fit this area then by all means do.

As always, please do take to the thread to mock or ridicule other peoples choices, as well as to discuss why you have nominated the titles you have.

My Game of The Generation Titles

Fallout 3 - The first HD game I bought and played. It was, and still is an amazing experience, one that has eaten up i'd imagine around 100 hours of my gaming time.

Red Dead Redemption - A beautiful open world masterpiece. Rockstar nailed the formula with this one combining great gameplay, a realistic world that was a pleasure to explore, a stunning soundtrack, well crafted characters and an exceptional story

Super Mario Galaxy - With rose tinted glasses on I'd say that Super Mario 64 is easily one of the best games I have played and completed. With that in mind Super Mario Galaxy is the best Mario game I have ever played so it must be special if it beat out 64. With the first fully orchestrated Nintendo soundtrack and an art style that oozes Nintendo charm and manages to churn out graphics as good as some PS3 titles, this gravity defying playtformer deserves to be played by everyone.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - No list of mine would be complete without a Zelda title, and this time it was a toss up between two, but for me Twilight Princess surpasses the more recent Skyward Sword thanks to a great cast of characters including an exceptional sidekick and antagonist, a huge (if somewhat empty) Hyrule, some of the best dungeons in Zelda history and probably the second best story to grace a Zelda title that manages to capture light hearted moments while still having an overwhelming sense of dread. Masterful.

Saints Row The Third - Pushing out Saints Row 4 by the skin of its teeth, SR3 wins out thanks to its mission variety, lack of super powers, and superior and funnier story. With some of the greatest set pieces I have played, countless activities and some excellent musical choices at key moments, SR3 was the first game I ever platinumed. In hindsight I should've voted for this as my 2011 GOTY rather than Skyward Sword, but sometimes it takes looking back to realise just how much you enjoyed a particular title.

Indie Game/Digital/HD Port of the Generation

Okami HD – Without a doubt the best Zelda game without the word Zelda in it. This HD PSN release is gorgeous to look at and had a play time of around 35 hours and I loved every minute. An engrossing story, full of interesting characters and intrigue, with enjoyable combat and a stunning soundtrack.

Trine 2 – For me this was the game that justified my initial purchase of a Wii U. As soon as I started playing off screen on just the gamepad I couldn’t put it down. It looked great, the puzzles and combat with the character switching was enjoyable and it cost around £6. Bargain.

Limbo – It took me two attempts to enjoy this game, the first time round on the PS3 I gave up, but when I recently started playing it on the Vita I was hooked With a moody art style, and an atmosphere most games will never create, Limbo is a real gem of a game.

Fallout 3 - I fully intend to return to it again in December with another character. That in itself tells you everything you need to know.

Mass Effect Trilogy - If I have to pick one of them, I'll probably go with 2.

May add more later.

Waiting....
I've really got to get back into Fallout 3. I've started a couple of times and never gotten past Megaton; I always go back to FIFA! I usually do the task where you have to check out the store for one of the retailers and report back to them. That's where I usually stop.

I'll have to think about my list, but I imagine it will be RDR, Uncharted 2 and possibly FIFA 11.

How many do you need? It's RDR for me, with Super Mario Galaxy and Fallout 3 rounding out the rest.

I was thinking about this thread earlier but was struggling to think of anything different to add.

Games of the Generation:
The Last of Us
Heavy Rain
Portal 2
Arkham Asylum

Special mentions to: Bioshock, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Red Dead Redemption

Indie/HD Games:
Hotline Miami
Minecraft

I wasn't sure what to do with game I've played on the PC as technically there's no "generation" for the PC but the games I've included were released on 360 and/or PS3.

Red Dead Redemption
(U mad, Matt?)

Combined a superb storyline (incredible attention to detail in the plot and I still maintain that it would make an excellent film) with extremely enjoyable gameplay and a fascinating, and vast, open world to explore. My favourite game of all time.

Skyrim

As Ali will tell you, I've spent too much time on this game and yet, even after 400 hours of playing, it still managed to be enjoyable. The depth of the detail in every part of the game is staggering. Just a shame that the ending to the main storyline was a bit meh, otherwise it would probably be my favourite.

Assassins Creed II

Superb gameplay and the storyline really sucked me in. I loved the depictions of Venice and Florence. Gave me a huge load of escapism at a time when I really needed it, as well.

Mirror's Edge

Very unique game. Had a very original feel to it and an immersive storyline too. I feel this kind of game was what this generation of consoles needed more of (by that I mean, I expected more games, which had these unique feels to them).

FIFA 09

The first proper next-gen football game - when FIFA went from being PES's hated and inferior rival to being undisputed top dog in the football game market. And it's never looked back from there really.

Games of this Generation:

GTA V - It's an obvious choice but fuck it
Batman: Arkham City - Couldn't fault a single thing with it.
NBA 2k - Am I allowed to nominate a series? It's the best sporting simulation I've ever played.

Indie/HD Games:

Hotline Miami - One of my favourite games of the year. Simple, violent brilliance. Great soundtrack. Sequel comes out on PS4 next year, can't wait.
Lone Survivor - Another Jasper Byrne game. Just as engaging as Hotline.
