player positions

I was wondering, could someone explain to me how player positions work.
What is the difference between SS and CF on the same place on the field, if i have a player who dan play on both positions. Does it matter if i let him play as a CF or as a SS. Will he walk other lines or something?

Same question for the difference between: CM - DM, CM-ATM or ATM-SS.

Thanks in advance,

Smitser

it affects the areas the player will appear, a CF will be appear up front a bit more than a SS, just as an AMF will appear more forward and a DMF will appear more backward on the pitch, even if they are positioned in the same position...

Similarly, if you have players at SB who have a tendancy to drift forward leaving you short at the back, and you want them to stay back, a good way is to edit their positions to make them CB. It affects their positioning on the pitch and makes them stay back.

Or you can change thier card to defensive only

I find when I play someone who is technically an SS in the CF position they tend not to find their way into the box when I'm delivering crosses in. Not all the time obviously, but the SS players naturally will want to hang around the 18 yard line for any pull backs or loose balls. Whereas my main CF, Gignac, will always be charging into the box trying to win it.

Depends on your formation, if you play 1 CF on his own as a target man you ideally need him to be a CF so he stays high up the pitch. If you play 2 up top then it doesn't matter, you can go 2 CF's and have them both up there or you can play one SS and have them stay slightly back to give you a passing option.
