PS2 patching questions.

I've finally decided to take the plunge and attempt to patch PES5 on the PS2. But i'm a newb when it comes to this stuff so i'd just like a couple of questions answered before i attempt it.

1. Wich is the best DVD-Burner to get out of this lot...

http://search.ebay.co.uk/dvd-burner_W0QQfltZ9QQfromZR8

I would prefer an external one, could someone select one that would get the job done and repost the link.

2. I have windows millenium, will this effect the installation of the DVD-Burner when i get it, and is it simple to install. Like do i just connect a cable to the back of my PC and and use an installation disc what comes with it?

3. I have the aqua blue PS2 i don't know the edition number, but what is the best DVD to use when patching PES5 on this version of the PS2, DVD+R or DVD-R? Sorry if i messed up the DVD names. :)

4. Are all the tools i need to patch linked on this site? And do i have to pay for any?

Thanks, i just need these questions answered before i splash out on a DVD-Burner.

1. Don't buy a DVD Rewriter from Ebay. The seller will probably send you a 2nd hand one. Go out and buy a brand new DVD Rewriter. Do you mind buying online? You'll save around £20 on a new DVD Rewriter if you buy from an online shop rather than a brick wall retailer.

2. No. External DVD Rewriters are plug and play. Just connect the cable to back of your PC and you're off. Therefore, there's no need for an installation disc.

3. DVD-R. It simply has a better compatibility rate with a range of different DVD hardware.

4. All the tools required for patching are located in this forum. You'll have to search for them. And no, you don't have to pay for any of these tools.

EDIT: If you need any help in buying a DVD Rewriter that's right for you, then I could always point you in the right direction.

Just ask.

Sorry, just saw you're reply.

But what kind of external DVD-Burner do you reccomend? Could you post a link of the (external) kind i should buy. I really don't want to waste money on one that won't work for what i want to do.

I wouldn't recommend buying USB DVD Rewriters.

Especially if you have other USB devices connected to your PC at the same time. It can lead to hardware problems.

Have you got Firewire on your PC? Firewire is a lot more reliable for CD/DVD drives than using USB.

I would know, I use an external DVD Rewriter through Firewire myself.

So do you mind if it's USB or Firewire or both?

I don't really mind what it is... But i don't even know what firewire is so i guess i don't have it. What's wrong with the USB ones? Do they not work? I don't really mind what type i use as long as it gets the job done.

DVD Rewriters > USB >

DVD Rewriters > Firewire >

The USB ones do work but the reliability isn't there. Firewire however, is 100% reliable.

Firewire comes in 2 forms - 6 pin and 4 pin.

This is an example of what a 6 pin Firewire port looks like:

(Look at the black things at the right hand of the picture).

This is an example of what a 4 pin Firewire port looks like:

http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=firewire4pin9mf.jpg

(The black thing furthest to the left is a 4 pin port and the other two are 6 pin ports).

http://img474.imageshack.us/my.php?image=firewire4pin6pin9ln.jpg

Here, on the left is a 4 pin Firewire connector and on the right is a 6 pin Firewire connector.

Have a look if you have any of these ports on your PC. It would help greatly in terms of burning performance if you use Firewire.

Man looks like i'm screwed. I don't have those ports on my PC, i guess it'll be pretty sucky if i use a USB port too.

Isn't there any sites what sell a pre-patched PES5? I know that it goes against the hard work of the patch maker who did all the work but ebay is full of option files what are most likely rip offs of other option files.

If anyone knows a place to buy pre-patched editions of PES5 please tell me where, this patching stuff looks like hard work, it'd be much easier to just buy it off somebody who has alreadt patched it.

I guess i'm distined to play PES with crappy kits for the rest of my life.

The only other suggestion I can make is for you to buy an Internal DVD Rewriter.

Have you ever opened up your PC? If yes then basically, all you have to do is to remove 2-3 wires from the back of your current CD/DVD drive inside your tower, replace the old drive with the new drive and connect the wires up again.

If not, then you could always hire a computer engineer or a technician to do it for you. Although, this could be quite expensive (in terms of labour costs).

If you still want to go down the external USB route, then I'd suggest that you uninstall all of the USB devices on your PC. You simply can't have a CD/DVD drive communicating with multiple devices over the same bus. It's just not feasible.

Also, make sure your PC has USB 2.0. Otherwise you could be waiting forever for your DVD to burn.

I wouldn't recommend buying option files from Ebay. For one, you can download option files for free from this forum.

But believe me, you're missing out if you go for an option file. The patches that you can download out there are incredible.

You get all the correct kits, correct player and team names, correct team logos and you even get the correct announcer names (Peter Brackley actually says "Man United", "West Bromwich Albion" etc) and other features such as a change of in-game music.

All this from a patch. I strongly recommend you buy a DVD rewriter. But take your time in deciding which one is best for you.

EDIT: Why don't you buy a PCI Firewire card? You can buy those off Ebay. But again, you need to open up your PC and fit it into a free PCI slot.

But this is a lot easier than opening up your PC, disconnecting your old CD/DVD drive and connecting your new DVD Rewriter drive.

Seems like alot of hassle, i think i'll just bide my time (again).

Yeah i really want a patched PES But with all the stuff i'll have to buy i'm not sure it's worth it. What i meant about the option file thing is... I just wish somebody would sell a proper, finished, patched version of PES5 on ebay or something, they sell plenty of option files but no patched PES's.

I really wan't a patched pes and i'd rather buy it off somebody than do it myself, do you know of any place's where i could just buy a PES5 what somebody has already patched?

I don't know of anyone who sells patched games in this country.

However, in Asia, there are lots of underground shops where you can buy patched, modified or pirated copies of PS2 games.

That's about as much as I can tell you (otherwise I might get banned if I go into any more detail).

It might help if you tell me the current setup of your PC. What kind of processor have you got, what speed, RAM, HDD space, CD/DVD drives?

If you've got a low spec PC, then it might even be worth buying a new computer (with a DVD Rewriter drive built in).

Ahhh... Sorry for bringing up such a shady subject.

I'm not sure on my PC's setup... But i'm pretty sure it's not that powerful. It was purchased back in 2002 or something so i'm sure it's got nothing on modern PC's.

Anyway i think i'll leave it for now, thanks for your help, you've been great. ;)

*Heads off to Asia*

I don't think the fact that you bought your PC in 2002 really matters.

If your PC was medium to high spec at the time of purchase, then I reckon your PC is OK for DVD writing.

I mean, I bought my PC in 2003 and it's still does a pretty good job for everything I tell it to do. But then again, I bought a top of the range PC back then.

It probably explains why my PC is still in the medium spec range at the moment.

If you want expert knowledge on what DVD Rewriter is best for you and your PC's setup, then why don't you post over at cdfreaks?

All they discuss there is CD/DVD technologies and hardware etc. You'll get some very well informed replies over there.
