Single Player, wtf.

On the Nintendo 64, every game was about 25 - 30 hours long. On the PS2, most games at the beggining of the generation were about 15-20 hours long. Ever since XBL and PSN have arrived, most games have become 6 - 10 hours long.

Top Selling Games

Call of Duty 4 - 6 hours

Halo 3 - 8 hours

Gears of War - 10 hours

There are games still in next gen that are long. Mass Effect, Bioshiock, Oblivion, and most RPG's but there way more games that are just 10 hours long. I don't want to bash multiplayer in any way because it is great fun playing with friends on Live but I feel that everybody (including developers) focus more on multiplayer than single player. Buying games at full price is hard enough but paying that much cash for a game that is 10 hours long is pathetic. I think developers should make single player the top priorities of games again. Don't cut the multiplayer, just make SP longer.

What are your thoughts?

I think CoD4 has the right balance.

I know the multiplayer is great and all but the single player is shockingly short for such a popular game. Having played the single player, I will agree that it is very good quality but it doesn't last nearly as long as COD 1 and 2, both of which were +15 hours.

Mass Effect wasn't at all long. Oblivion is an exception due to the fact its a perpetual open world. I know what you mean but its the price we pay for:

a) consoles
b) high-end graphics
c) the importance of games companies remaining financially viable.

I can see where you're coming from, but how many people who own an Xbox or PS3 don't have it online? They'll still get as much value out of it IMO.

I have to say it really annoys me. Mainly because I prefer to play single player games rather than multiplayer. If a game has co-op then good cause then me and my brother or mates could just have a laugh. If it has online multiplayer then okay, I don't hate it but don't exactly love it either. I would just see it as a little bonus. Anyway, I like playing games that have over 30+ hours of single player but nowadays developers seem to be more focusing on graphics and online multiplayer that single player is minimized as possible. Games like MotorStorm haven't even got split-screen multiplayer. A racing game and split-screen multiplayer should go hand in hand. I took my PS3 to my mates just to play some games multiplayer and I found out that the only game I had that could atleast be co-op was Resistance: Fall of Man.

For me it is.

1. Single player
2. Co-operation (Through single player campaign)
3. Online multiplayer.

Only because you're running/driving around for hours bored out of your fucking mind.

Like Jin said, I think Call Of Duty 4 had it right, the single player length seemed just about right - taking into account the detailed multiplayer.

Loving the signature there mate.^^^

I agree. I can't remember the last time where it's taken me ages to complete a game. Having said that, I still haven't got past 40% on GTA 'cause I've been so busy recently that all I have time for is a few games of PES here and there.

I agree with evey single thing you said.

That is one of the reasons I am looking foward to getting Too Human and Fable 2 this year.

Yes, but paired with Last Stand it takes even longer to finish them off, by which time you will probably have been gunned down by someone else. Still the most annoying perk.

I agree. It's pathetic how such a small amount of games support co-op play. Apart from PES (naturally), the only game I can play offline with my mate is Lego Star Wars. And Warhawk is the only game I've played that supports split-screen online.

Single player is great and all, and it's worrying me how short the campaigns are getting. But I'm much more concerned that the days of playing with mates against bots are numbered. :(

I am looking forward to Fable 2 as well, hopefully it's out for the PC not much after it will be for the consoles and that we get some graphics worthy of our hardware.(Not some direct port to PC from console) :w00t Or I'm just asking too much?

And I think you forgot, Fable is incredibly short for a RPG. Even after playing/completing all the side quests + playing the extended part in The Lost Chapters. It still is short.

Yeah, Fable is pretty short. But the amount of things you can do after finishing the main/side quests is overwhelming. I clocked a +100 hours in the Last Chapters.
