This post is a bit about AI scripting and tactics. Just a little story from my today's session for you about exploring the game.

Today, me and my cousin were playing co-0p champions league offline as Chelsea on top player. We won the first three games of the group stages 1-0, 2-1 and 1-0. All those were really tough games. And then we were held 1-1 in the fourth game and lost the fifth game 1-4 as Petr Cech was sent off. The last game we won 6-2 and progressed to the next round. Knowing pro evo, we warned each other that everything would favour the AI opponent in the knockout rounds.

We got Lyon in the first knock out round. In the first leg, which was away at Lyon, we beat them 3-2. Then we thought our home match would only be a formality but then we knew that AI's god mode would set in. Believe it or not - Lyon thumped us 4-1 and knocked us out. Anyway, we had saved the progress after the first round so we reloaded the tournament to play the second leg again.

This time, we made some very key tactical changes. We kept the defensive line a bit deeper. We changed the formation from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1. Through player cards, we changes the mentality of our defenders to defence-minded and restrained the full backs from going forward. Had the holding midfielders also in defensive mindset and the attacking players in balanced mindset.

AI came at us but withstood all it could attempt. We produced a fantastic defensive display to keep them at bay. And, we also attacked as much as possible but with caution. We made a lovely attacking move to go 1-0 up by half time. We were determined not to give away a goal. When it got to about 70th minutes, under assisted setting, we changed the attack balance to 'defence'. We finally won. We had produced a tactical masterclass to win this match and the tie.

Of course, AI plays very strongly when needed and things are made to favour the attacking AI but the tactical depth in the game is so much that you can still find your way out if you know what to do. Basically, focus and concentrate hard plus know and apply your tactics, the God mode AI can be beaten.

Or..... maybe, just maybe lyon played better because they had nothing to lose and wer goin for the win, which happens in real life, it would be boring if they didnt go for a win and sat there doing nothing

No offence mate but setting guys to 'defensive' and stuffing the midfield isn't exactly tactical masterclass 101.

I'm more curious as to how specific formations and settings work when facing specific situations.

e.g. opposition plays 3-5-2 so you go 4-3-3 and tell your wide players to attack the space wide (ie 'behind the fullback'), reduce compactness slider so players go for longer passes / positions and you exploit lack of defensive width with quick diagonal through passes.

I'd love to read a guide on something like above

Well, I didn't go into the details of what else we had done. We did change the formation to counter the opponents and modify various other sliders. The reason why I called it a masterclass was the way we executed the plan. Having a tactical plan is all too easy. What matters is how you support the plan and execute the plan.

It's very easy to plan "let's not concede a goal in this half". But then you change the formation, you change the sliders, you as the player play with a compatible mentality and execute the plan accurately. When we were executing the plan, we had clear ideas about which players to make runs with, which players to roam around, which players not to leave our half and which players to go up and how to deal with set pieces etc. So, it's an all round plan but let me tell you, it's all about executing the plan.

By the way, wide players to attack the space wide is all they do for a living. Edit the positions of the wide players, set the compactness to low, attacking style to low etc.
