Why is the positioning of players so abysmally poor?

There are tons and tons of things wrong with this game - some excusable but most not. However I just cannot fathom how they've managed to screw up the positioning of players so badly, unless it was done intentionally. I've tried about 5 different formations and tweaked the settings of each to no avail. I always get players bunched up leaving other areas of the field totally unattended. Crossing from the sidelines is a joke because it's a treat just to see any of your forwards in the middle. They're either on the oppsoite sideline or waiting OUTSIDE the penalty box. Even the very first PES had this aspect sorted out much better than 2008.

Has Konami given any indication of revamping the gameplay and especially the positioning in the next version?

Yes I know. The answer is not because defending is bad (it is bad but not that bad) it's because it all depends on pace and so attackers will always be in huge advantage over the defenders.

sometimes you have to hold up the ball and wait for players to get in the box, but i aint defending the game cause positioning is very poor at times. you find your self wondering where your wing backs went for their walkies, and other yor centre backs run around like headless chicken and you don't know what they are marking cause it sure aint the strikers. for example if i'm gettin couter attacked two on two, when i try to control the guy the in the middle i make him run with the striker gettin into the the box, but as soon as i switch to the other guy to try block the cross or get in a tackle, he then stops tracking back or runs away from him leaving the oppostion free in the box. i get annoyed because its common sense really.

Good to know that there are others who have the same problems. Hopefully Konami can sort it out in the next version.

I agree the positioning can be erratic to say the least, but the consider the alternative...

Perfect positioning, swinging the balance in favour of defenders over forwards?
What is perfect positioning anyway? Your idea in any given phase of play my be different to mine.

I think the positioning is adjustable enough when you use the attack arrows, defence arrows, marking strategies, whole team Attack/Defence levels and the actual positioning of players on the pitch together. Sounds complicated? It is!

Now go and play some attacking football...
