When I created my player I assigned him for playing at centre midfield and side midfield. Usually I'm put in the position of attacking midfielder which suits me really well. You get a decent overview over the gameplay and it's a heck of a position to give a thru pass or to score by yourself.
Lately the AI coach tends to alternate by putting me in the centre or the wings. Being a wing player is definitely harder. The overview is very poor and you rarely receive passes. If you want to move up to the centre you get penalized by the rating system. The best score I seem to get at this position is a 6.0. But the biggest pet peeve is that when the opposition is allowed a corner kick, your player is placed close to the corner flag.
I conceded a couple of goals like that, as by the time the camera angle switches someone managed a good header. By the time you move your player to the centre of the box, the corner kick is already on it's way. Sadly enough I found it more opportune to skip games like that, avoiding poor ratings and an annoying time on the pitch.
