Xbox 360 Pes 2010 - What The Hell Am I Doing Wrong?!

OK I've been playing football games on & off since 1999. Around 2 months ago I got PES 2010 for the Xbox 360 and began playing having not played a football game for almost a year. Everything was great at first and I even managed to get good enough to play my Master League save on Top Player difficulty and STILL beat the computer.

The thing is, something has changed all of a sudden and for several weeks now I've been absolutely AWFUL at the game. For example, before I could play against Real Madrid and beat them 3-0. Now I'm sitting here having just suffered a humiliating defeat against West Ham 4-0 on REGULAR difficulty. It's extremely rare that I win whatsoever these days. I play as Man City in my Master League save.

To be honest, I think I've picked up a bad habit/playing style that I just can't seem to put my finger on, and it's causing me to be crap at the game basically. Anyway, I'll try to explain as best I can how exactly I play:

Things I Do:

- When I don't have the ball, I CONSTANTLY hold down 'A' which causes the player I'm controlling to apply pressure to the person who has the ball.

- I only hold down 'X' when the opposition is deep within my half, which of course causes 1 of my team members (who I'm NOT controlling) to also apply pressure to the person currently in possession of the ball.

- When I'm in possession, I only ever hold down sprint when I'm running down the wing. If I'm in the middle of the pitch I don't sprint.

Things I Don't Do

- I rarely slide tackle as I just seem to mess it up.

- I hardly EVER long pass, due to the fact that it seems that's just a way of giving my opponents the ball, as it never lands at 'MY' players' feet.

One of the things that is extremely irritating is the fact that the opposing team can spend all day passing the ball around to each other quite happily and it will hardly EVER be intercepted by my players, but as soon as I get the ball, 2-3 passes and it's intercepted by the opposition. I have no idea what I should be doing in order to intercept passes, and due to the fact that I always hold down 'A' to apply pressure, that basically removes all free control of the player I'm meant to be controlling at the time.

Another thing is, I absolutely SUCK at defending. I mean, my opponents can literally start from kick off and not have to make a single pass whatsoever, yet still be able to run rings around all my defence and bury the goal in the back of the net.

I don't know what use this thread is going to be to me to be honest as you can't exactly see me playing, but I just thought I'd try & get whatever help I can anyway.

Many thanks in advance!

Sounds like you're doing most things right.

Try holding both tackle/pressure buttons at the same time, plus run for even more pressure. In PES 2010 it is pretty tough to get caught with players out of position because team-mates will drop back very effectively to provide cover.

Other things to try:

Use a DMF instead of CMF.

Make sure all your layers have their player cards set how you want them. Defensive for CB, SB, DMF, etc.

Use the "pressure" strategy.

Try playing with the sliders to adjust how your team plays. Increasing support and the other sliders near the top of the list really can improve the sorts of positions your attackers take up, which will result in less interceptions from the AI.

Use through pass less - more easily intercepted.

Hold run while clearing headers, seems to help for me anyway.

Control the ball like they do. Don't let them have it. Make easy passes and maintain possession instead of low success-high reward passes. Nothing makes for a better defense than a good offense.

Build up on the wings where there is more space and less likely to get intercepted.
