Zelda game named 'greatest ever'
Zelda
Zelda helped usher in the 3D gaming era
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has topped a poll of readers of Edge magazine and industry experts to find the top 100 games of all time.

The 10-year-old videogame for the Nintendo 64 games console helped usher in a new era of 3D gaming.

It is also one of only five games ever to receive a 10 out of 10 review score from Edge magazine.

Five of the top 10 titles were made only for Nintendo machines, including Super Mario 64, in third spot.

The full list of 100 titles has been compiled for a special edition of Edge magazine.

Tony Mott, editor-in-chief of Edge, said: "If you were new to video games and were going to go out and buy 100 games to make an instant collection, then these would be the games to buy."

He added: "Ocarina of Time is nearly 10 years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Videogames shows that great game design does not age.

"In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance."

TOP 10 EDGE POLL
Resident Evil 4
1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina
2. Resident Evil 4
3. Super Mario 64
4. Half Life 2
5. Super Mario World
6. Zelda: A Link to the Past
7. Halo: Combat Evolved
8. Final Fantasy XII
9. Tetris
10. Super Metroid

Only one PC game makes the top 10 - classic first person shooter Half Life 2. Microsoft's Xbox also has only one representative in the elite list - with Halo: Combat Evolved at number seven.

Only five games for the next generation of consoles have made the top 100 - Pro Evolution Soccer 6, at number 15, Oblivion, at number 19, Virtua Fighter 5, in 38th spot, Virtua Tennis 3 at number 80, and Crackdown at 100.

Tony Mott said: "Crackdown hasn't been around long but has proved itself to be a very good game. It will be interesting to see people's reaction to that.

"If we did this poll in five year's time, I would hope to see more PS3 and Xbox 360 games in the list. But I don't think anyone would argue we have seen that many classics in this new generation."

The list was drawn together in three stages - thousands of reader votes, combined with expert opinion in the games industry and finally input from Edge's own editorial team.

Mr Mott said Ocarina of Time was the reader favourite as well as the overall winner.

'Brilliantly well'

He said: "It appeared not long after games made the shift to 3D; everyone was wondering if it could make the transition.

"It was a very ambitious game. The way they were able to engineer it in a 3D context was a success; it worked brilliantly well."

But he said the intention behind the poll was not to create a "nostalgia festival".

"These games had to stand up today. People will be surprised by the small amount of very old games that have made it through.

"Often these types of lists are full of games like Space Invaders and Pong - which we recognise as classics, as important games - but they don't necessarily stand up to play today."

He added: "I love the fact that old games are being made available to audiences via Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and through compilations but I am not convinced that younger players will play them and appreciate them in the way we did the first time round.

"It's very hard for younger players who play something graphically-rich like Gears of War to then play something like Robotron.

"I think it will be for the greater good of the industry when more effort is put into the content of games than the way they are presented visually."

The five titles to have received a maximum review score from Edge are: Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Half-Life 2, Gran Turismo, Super Mario 64 and Halo.

The full list of the top 100 games will be available in a collector's volume called Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames, on sale from Tuesday 3 July.

I'd have to go ahead and disagree on that poll, i can't believe Final Fantasy 7 aint even in the top 10

I always used to think Zelda was the boy. Not really into Zelda type games although I have a game for the Wii.

My mate used to have that Zelda game on his n64 and it werent that good, i always thought Goldeneye was the best game on that console anyway..

I have to disagree with probably 8/10 games on that... especially Zelda because we all know Goldeneye was the best N64 game-easily.

Was just discussing this over at PESFan.

I have nothing against Ocarina of Time up there as it was one of my favourite games ever, behind Final Fantasy VII & IX but for the time of its released, I definitely see why it got up there. Fond memories. Probably be my number 2.

Other than that, that poll is a farce. Although the heading can be misleading as it is only named 'greatest ever' by Edge viewers.

It just seems to be the younger generations voting for more recent games as the fact that Final Fantasy XII is in the top 10 over Final Fantasy VII says it all. Final Fantasy XII was a very poor game by the standards of the franchise but FFXII appeals to more recent gamers as they completely changed the battle system which makes the game feel less strategic but more 'realistic'.

Judging by that list, I am more than suprised to see Tetris there. Although I think a lot of older games could easily be in that top 10, Tetris was just never my thing.

I would say Halo being in that top 10 is obviously a bunch of fanboys voting as there is well more deserving games over Halo.

Again by the poll, I am actually surprised to see Super Metroid there. I can't really say much about Super Metroid as it is one I have to play but I have heard nothing but highly positive comments on all the games.

In the end, I don't think the top 10 is that good. Then again, usually the top 10 games in magazines, gaming websites are generally poor.

EDIT: One game that not many have played that deserves to be there is Shadow of the Colossus. If anyone has played it then they will understand why as it is a very innovative game. It is probably one of the few games that has one several awards but at the same time, not overrated. Genius of a game.

I'd deffo put FF7 & 8 in that list over shitty 10, Shenmue's another game that was good but i guess barely anyone had a dreamcast...

I got a Dreamcast. I remember my brother traded a PS2 American Football game for a Dreamcast and about 4 games. Never bought anything for it, though.

My favourite Final Fantasy was X. It so happens that all non-RPG friends I know were hooked up to this game too. Closely followed it until the next release, in where we completely forgot about it.

FF X, I miss it.

Tony Mott

My top ten:

1. PES series.
2. Halo series
3. GTA series
4. Mario Kart 64
5. Goldeneye
6. Shenmue Series
7. MArio 64
8. Worms series
9. Bomberman
10. Broken Sword series

These are my opinions so please do not cry, also I am very much aware of the irony that my list features more than 10 games.

Yup, pretty pathetic list.

No Doom or Monkey Island 1 or 2? Fuck off.

I do love Monkey Island. Puzzle games are mint, I reckon Broken Sword just about wins the Genre for me though. Discworld is another great puzzle series and one off wise Grim Fandango is a laugh.

What a shite list. Crackdown at 100? My God can't this magazine and it's readers just die a slow death? The only USP of Crackdown was the Halo 3 beta. Super Mario 64, Tetris and Halo are great choices, but RE4 is not even the best RE, HL2 isn't the best Half-Life. Well as for Final Fantasy I loathe those games, but someone must love them.

My very own top 10 ( I call it "The greenegg List" as it covers more than 10)

Ninja Gaiden
Knights of The Old Republic Series
Pro Evolution Soccer series
The Halo Series
Gran Turismo 3 ( 4 was wank and uninspiring)
The Battlefield series( in particular 1942 and 2, not the Vietnam wank)
Grand Theft Auto series
Golden Sun series
Total War Series
Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors Expansion

Wish I could've put Grim Fandango there.

GoldenEye was topped by Perfect Dark by the way, it was basically GoldenEye but even better.

Perfect Dark on N64 was perhaps slightly better than Goldeneye in the respect it had better weapons and was just an updated version but for me I had more fun and good times on Goldeneye. I prefer Multiplay to Solo so only a special game (GTA, Shenmue, Puzzlers) would make my list solo wise. Barry Crackdown was only good for getting Halo Beta and you were right to spot this. I also wasn't a fan of FF games, they just bored me. So putting things into perspective Multiplay rules and this is the reason I have had Xbox live for 4 years and was one of the first to get it, I feel it is better to mock mates than AI.

True, it takes something special for a game to keep my interest in the singleplayer. It's great to go online, practice a bit and have a laugh, or sit around with a couple of mates, having a few and then go an all-nighter.

FF has the same generic characters with the bent-penis-haircuts, the same atrocious story lines, the turn-based fighting( although they fixed that now so I heard). I think they are trying to break FIFA's most sequels award.

The thing that wound me up about it was it was turn based. It's just like, HEy I will hit you once and then you can have all the time in the world to retaliate but only once. I like to go Windmilling in and smashing at a rapid rate of knots.
