the thing is, on one of my myclub accounts I do actually have a superstar team and they play pretty well, but not all the time, that's what interests me about the game really - the inconsistency because that at least is one thing that would correlate to the real game, no?

You need to control your defenders at the right time - decide if you want to sit back and hold position or bring them out to close. Your defenders are the last line, if the rest of the team is doing their job you shouldn't leave them too exposed. I use the square button (ps3) rather than X so...
