Anyone having problims with the game freezing on "testing network environment", if your ISP is BT, try and call Konami on 02089875730. They were very helpful.
phoned the number and was emailed the following - edited to miss out (in my opinion) daft questions.
Getting Connected and its Associated Problems
Q. I connect to the internet with a BT Voyager 205 ADSL modem. When I attempt to play PES 5 online, the screen displays "Testing Network Environment" and gets stuck there. I cannot continue and have to reset the machine.
A. This typically occurs when attempting to play through BT Voyager 205 modems, although other modems and routers have displayed similar problems that can be overcome in similar a way. The solution is put the PS2 into the router's DMZ, meaning it bypasses the firewall. This is a two part operation. Please follow these steps:
1) Configure the modem. The following are steps for configuring BT Voyager 205 modems. Other modems or routers may require a different procedure; consult your vendor, the documentation or look for your model at www.portforward.com. You are setting up a DMZ for the PS2, meaning it is no longer behind the firewall.
a) Ensure that the modem is connected to a PC.
b) Using the PC, open a web browser (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer) and enter the following into the address bar:
192.168.1.1
Do not use http, www, or //
c) This should open the modem configuration screen. Click ADVANCED on the lefthand side. You may be asked for a password at this stage. The default entry for both username and password is "admin".
d) Select IP Routing.
e) In the drop-down box next to NAT options, select NAT Virtual Server/DMZ
f) Click ADD
g) A window will pop up. Enter the following information:
Rule Flavor: DMZ
Rule ID: 10
LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.10
h) Click APPLY
i) You should be informed that the rule was successfully added. Click SAVE on the lefthand side of the screen.
You can now close the browser window.
2) Configure the Playstation 2. You will be assigning it a static IP so that the router can send it information.
a) Load up PES 5 and select the Network option from the Mode Select Screen (aka the main menu). Agree to the DNAS disclaimer.
b) On the Connect to Network screen, do not load your network settings from the memory card. Instead, press SQUARE to access the Network Configuration Utility. Select Yes when you are asked if you wish to reconfigure your network settings.
c) Select Edit Setting.
d) Load your ISP settings from your memory card. Click YES to confirm.
e) Press d-pad RIGHT twice, click OK to confirm, and press RIGHT again.
f) You should now be in IP Address Setup. Move the cursor to Manual and press X to select it.
g) Press RIGHT. You will be in IP Address Entry. Enter the following information:
IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Router IP: 192.168.1.1
Press RIGHT again to enter DNS Server Entry. Enter the following information:
Primary DNS: 194.74.65.69
Secondary DNS: 217.35.209.180
h) Press RIGHT twice, and press X to save.
i) You will be asked to test your connection. Select YES - everything should be functioning OK.
j) Even if the test does not successfully complete, exit the Network Configuration Utility (press CIRCLE until you are back to PES).
k) Try and play online! Hopefully it will now function properly.
Q. When I try to get into the IP Routing section of my BT Voyager 205, the page simply blinks and returns to the main Voyager screen.
A. This tends to be a problem with software firewalls. Ensure that the Windows XP firewall is turned off, along with any other software firewalls like Norton or Zone Alarm. You will only need to turn the firewall off while you are editing the modem's settings - you can turn it back on once this is complete. If the problem persists even though you are sure you have no software firewalls running, please contact BT.
Q. I have entered all the details correctly in the “Network Mode”, but when I select the “Internet Service Provider Setting” option the game freezes on the screen with the “DNAS” Logo and an error code is displayed.
A. This occurs when there are problems with the settings in the “Network Settings File” or the connection tools including the Server. Please check if the Network Settings have been set correctly.
Q. I have entered all the details correctly in the “Network Mode”, but when I select the “Internet Service Provider Setting” option, an error message “Unable to connect to server for network connection test.” is displayed on screen.
A. In such cases, please call the PlayStation “Hotline Number”. The number is printed on the manual provided with this software.
Q. I have entered all the details correctly in the “Network Mode”, but when I select the “Internet Service Provider Setting” option a message “Unable to transmit using UDP port %d (%d=number).” is displayed on screen.
A. In this case, please follow the below steps.
(1) If the Router you are using is compatible with UPnP, please make sure that the UPnP function is enabled.
(2) You will probably need to disable the Router’s Firewall Function. You should get expert advice before attempting this and refer to the Router Manual in order to this. If you can select the specific parts of the Firewall that you would like to disable, please Enable two way communications to and from the “PlayStation 2” Unit (Between LAN and WAN) using the below UDP and TCP ports from.
TCP Port: “80”, “443”, “9880”, “9881”, “9882”, “14020”
UDP Port:
If the “Port Settings” are set to Automatic in the game,
“3658”, “5730 through to 5739”
If the “Port Settings” are set to Manual,
Any port between “1024 through to 65535” that has been manually set.
Should this fail, then the Ports on the Router will need to be opened. In order to do this, please refer to the Router Manual for details.
Q. I am having difficulty connecting to the Pro Evolution Soccer 5 online service.
A. Many modems and routers have preconfigured firewalls that can interfere with PES
5’s ability to communicate online. This can cause a wide range of connection problems.
The recommended solution is to set up a DMZ on the router for the PS2. Konami cannot offer technical support for modems and routers, so you are advised to consult your router’s documentation or their technical support for assistance in this. Websites such as www.portforward.com may also be helpful.
You will also need to change the PS2’s configuration to take advantage of the DMZ. Recommended procedure is as follows. You will be assigning the PS2 a “static” IP address so that the router can send it information. Make a note of this static IP, as you will need to use it when you configure the router for the DMZ.
a) Load up PES 5 and select the Network option from the Mode Select Screen (aka the main menu).
IP Address: 192.168.1.10 (this will be the PS2's static IP address. You may change this if you need to, but ensure you use the same IP when configuring your router).
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Router IP: 192.168.1.1 (NOTE: This may change depending on your model of router. It is the same IP that you type into your web browser to access the router configuration screen).
Press RIGHT again to enter DNS Server Entry. Enter the following information:
Primary DNS: 194.74.65.69
Secondary DNS: 217.35.209.180 (These servers are the default BT DNS servers)
h) Press RIGHT twice, and press X to save.
i) You will be asked to test your connection. Select YES - everything should be functioning OK.
j) Even if the test does not successfully complete, exit the Network Configuration Utility (press CIRCLE until you are back to PES).
k) Try and play online! Hopefully it will now function properly.
Q. I have set my router to allow communication on UDP port 3658, but I cannot register a new account.
A. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 uses a number of different ports to send data. The complete list is as follows:
Purpose Protocol Port(s)
Game Data UDP 3658
Game Lobby TCP 15001 - 15009
SSL TCP 443
HTTP TCP 80
DNAS UDP 5730 - 5745
Unless all of these ports are open you may continue to experience difficulty. However, certain modems and routers cannot open large numbers of ports. The best idea in this case is create a DMZ for the PS2 - consult your documentation, ISP, or elsewhere in this FAQ for more information about this.
If it is not possible to open all the required ports and you cannot create a DMZ, the solution is to use another PS2 with a working connection to register. Once the account is registered you should be able to enter the game with just UDP port 3658 open.
Q. When I try to accept the DNAS agreement, I get an error message.
A. There are a number of reasons for error messages during DNAS authentication
- Ensure that the DNAS ports (listed elsewhere in this FAQ) are not blocked by your firewall or router.
- Some of the very early Playstation 2s are not compatible with DNAS. If you suspect your PS2 may be one such model, please contact Sony on 08702 42 22 99.
-DNAS will block access from modded PS2s, copied software, and cheat devices such as Gameshark.
-3rd party broadband adapters may not be compatible with DNAS. Ensure that you have a genuine Sony broadband adapter.
Q. I am having difficulty connecting with my D-Link router.
A. Some problems with D-Link routers have been solved by updating the firmware. Visit www.dlink.co.uk and follow the Technical Support links to get the newest firmware for your particular router. Be particularly careful to get the correct firmware for your device and to follow the update steps exactly as D-Link specify.
If this does not resolve the problem it is recommended that you set up a DMZ for the PS2. See elsewhere in this FAQ or your D-Link documentation for more information.
