I understand how the attacking arrows work i.e if you want your attacking midfielder to run into the box you go into formation editing select individual and then put his attackin arrow to go forward but was wondering if there was a way to get attacking player to play in a free roaming role the way gerrard dose 4 liverpool or rooney dose for man u at times
also what effect dose it have on players if you dont put any kind of attacking arrows on them as i have them on every player in the team????

Well I would recommend using the arrows in conjunction with the defence option in the individuals menu. With the defence controls, you can dictate how attacking a player is. In a sense, this will control how far a player is up and down the pitch. You can then use the attacking arrows to dictate a players position across the pitch.

The defence options aren't as influential as the arrows but it should get your players into the right areas.

Regarding having no arrows, this just does nothing. Your team will attack and defend as a unit and basically the arrows shift this unit into a different shape creating a fluid formation. (Eg, if you want a CM to move out to the right, he will do so when the team are in possession). If a player doesn't have an arrow, he will still attack/defend but only in the way the formation set tells him to. (The CM in this circumstance will remain central but will move forward as the play does and as his individual defence settings tell him to).

I would recommend you experimenting with different settings and formations and see which ones suit your style of play. The tactical variety is quite deep so it can pretty much do anything you want it to.

But what's the meaning of an attack arrow pointing back?

Does it mean that when you're attacking this player will defend?

I think so, but please, I want to know about your experiences.

When you're in ball control, the one with the attacking arrow pointing back, will run back to avoid counter attacks.

Kinda, yeah. Basically as your team formations moves forward, this player will move further back within that formation.

You can use this method to tell players which areas to go so to cover gaps left by other attackers.
