better than FIFA?

Hello all!
I used to be really into the fifa series, say around 1998 when they actually produced a good game. I was really disappointed with the 2005 version as it was low budgetty looking, skimped on celebrations, halves were limited to 15 or so minutes and so on. What I see on the forums of ea for the 2006 version doesn't look any better.
Needless to say I am looking for a quality football game, can you tell me how this game compares to EA's product and why I should spend my money on it.
Also is this game essentially a port of the PS2 version (that would be too bad) and if it is, is the next version that comes out in january also going to be a port?
I appreciate the help and feedback.
Thanks.

Just get it,You wont regret! PES is tonnes better then the crap excuse of a game "Fifa".

Yes it is a PS2 port, but you have more graphic options. This means it is nicer then on the ps2.
I think it's better than fifa (played it until pes came out on pc (2003)), but pes5 has some flaws. The refs are very very strict, every little foul is noticed. It depends a little bit on the ref but I think it's to strict.
You should try the demo before you buy the game, this way you can test it without spending money.

fifa = arcade
pes/we = sim

simple as that. you wanna score 5 goals a game from 50 yards out with van nistelrooy then buy fifa. but if you want quality realistic game play stick to pes/we. i'm a pes convert, i'm never fifa'ing again. end of story.

I suppose if u are looking for a game to use right before bed to help you ease off into a gloriously horrific sleepy form then fifa is the game u want whereas if u want excitement and a game that feels realistic bringing you times of happiness and times of total anger then PES is THE game!

If football was a film, fifa would be the big hollywood blockbuster, BIG effects, noises and ULTRA un realistic physics. Pro evo would be the low budget english film, no FX or fancy explosions, just a down to earth raw footy experience.

fifas gameplay is utter bollocks and th player likenasses are crap, but the career mode is quality and the atmosphere of the crowd and colour is fantastic. pro evolutions graphics seem very dull compared to fifa. but pro evo is still better. FIFA 99 was the best football game ever by the way!

I don't think the gulf in graphics is that big. I mean, I can recognise individual players far more easily when playing PES. The player models are better in FIFA, but the animation in PES is, and has been for some time, far superior than EA's. As well as that, FIFA's facial textures tend to be quite bland compared to PES. The only major difference is the lask of official lits for all the teams. But once you've edited the game with one of the many great patches (from the hard-working and under-appreciated editing community) it beats FIFA hands down.

Except for the commentary. When will they learn...
