Hey there,
I haven't played MLO for a while since i don't have Xbox Live Gold, but there should be an option to reset your team. You then start with the default players and the default starting amount of cash. I think the option is somewhere under your team settings (where you can also change as which team you play)

YES! You can sell, "Release Player". You won't be paying severance fee, instead get money (they deduct a certain amount as a commission for the player). Try that. Haven't been playing MLO since my Gold account expired. Like you, I started MLO and was confused on how to get faster money than the gate receipts. Then, I attempted to release players, hoping that I could get some cash.
