Button Lag - The Solution/Solutions!

Hi,

After much investigation online I have stumbled on the solution to Button Lag.

I have been suffering with this since the launch of the game and have maybe had one game out of 40 without button lag (sometimes 5 second lag!) and out of 15 ranking games, i had only scored 1 and only drew one game, losing all the others badly.:brickwall:

However after some alterations to my settings I now a have a win streak of 5 in a row :dancer:

This is how i fixed my problem with button lag. However i'm not sure which one fixed it as i have did them all at the same time! (I have a 10mb virginmedia connection, which is wireless)

1. I updated the firmware on my router (linksys WRT54GR)
2. Made the PS3 have a Static IP address, by manually setting up the internet connection.
3. Put the PS3 into the DMZ. (on router using static ip)
4. Opened the following ports on my router for the PS3. (using static ip)

TCP 25000-25999 in/out
UDP 5730-5739 in/out
UDP 3658 in/out
UDP 3478 out
HTTP 80 out
HTTPS 443 out

http://portforward.com/ - used this site for guidance.

and hey presto no button lag even on a wireless connection!!!!!!!!:hamster:

I'm not sure which one actually fixed it, but if you do all the above, hopefully you'll sort the problem aswell.

Dangermouse out :superman:

Well done mate, im also virgin 10mb but sadly a bit of a luddite when it comes to the above. dont even recognise some of the acronyms! looks like succesful online gaming (with this game) a distant dream for me. just out of interest - does the above work even if opponent has red light? also could I bypass the above by just cabling to the PS3 and skipping wireless?

This is what probably solved the problem.
And btw, there is no need for opening ports, because when the PS is on DMZ it opens all the ports.

Sorry to hear it hasn't worked.

In answer to your questions:

I try not to play anyone with a red light - leave it awhile in the match room before committing to a game and watch the colour to see if its stable then go ahead if its only blinking occasionally.

Not tried a wired connection as its impractical for me - however you should still put the PS3 into the DMZ of your router even if wired.

By the way i have zero experience of this and just found out how to do by googling it - i don't really know what the abbreviations mean ether!

I would also double check your routers softare is up to date - i thought mine was at 1.04, however i updated it to 1.18!! so missed a number of updates somewhere.

This all sounds great, but how on earth do you put ps3 into DMZ. I have been through all my settings on the ps3 and do not see DMZ anywhere?

Spare the anger, i'm an internet rookie. Any help lads??

No probs mate. DMZ should be a setting within your router - not your PS3.

The DMZ page on my router is under the Applications/Gaming settings I have a Linksys router - model no. in original message. You should have something similar regardless of router.

On your PS3 you need to choose a static IP address by manually setting up an internet connection and using the ip address in DMZ page of your router.

hope that helps?

Just looked on the net and DMZ basically removes the security settings. Is this true?

maybe!!!

If you don't want to do that you can always forward the necessary ports, but that is more complicated. The ports you need to forward are: (should have a drop down box to choose TCP/UDP)

TCP 25000-25999 - range page
UDP 5730-5739 - range page
UDP 3658 - single port
UDP 3478 - single port
HTTP 80 - single port
HTTPS 443 - single port

Again within your router you should have a single port forward & port forward range pages.

You still need to assign your ps3 a static ip by manually setting up your internet connection on the internet settings within your PS3. To find out all the numbers you need to (on your pc) click on start button, then run, then type cmd, click enter, a dos type page should appear, type in ipconfig/all and that should come back with all the numbers you need.

one thing that confuses me is that it is actually ok sometimes - went on last night, and miraculously it was ok - played 4 - drew 1 won 3. not as if there were fewer players online or anything.

Dangermouse....good work!

I've seen you on PES2010 - although not played u yet?

I've had lots of issues with lag too - especially on PES2009 & 2008 before.

DMZ and port forwarding is a good idea, and can help alot - NAT 1 or NAT 2 are the aim here when you test your internet connection in PS3 network settings. And dependant on the make of your router can be easy or a pain in the ar*e to set up. www.portforwarding will help.

However, if that doesn't solve the problem you can besides getting all technical and does path traces and pings on your line you can goto www.speedtest.net and download TCP/IP optimizer....this can change some of your internet connection settings to prioritise different types of traffic...it can seem a bit daunting but the quide will help a little.

Otherwise get in touch and maybe I could help....either way I'm still getting problems with lag and lose more than i win at the moment and I've been playing since ISS 1 - on the N64 (1996).

Oh yes - one more thing.

You can also set up manually your connection settings and set your DNS addresses to opendns dns servers as opposed to Virgin media ones...

primary address = 208.67.222.222
secondary address = 208.67.220.220

This may also help....personally I've tried everything and I still have a disadvantage against a lot of players....maybe it's our type of PS3?

I've got the old 60Gb version, I wonder if the new ones suffer the same issue....or is it down to our ISP's or Konami???

Who knows?

Guys, the help you offer on here is terrific.

However, i have absolutely no idea where to put all those numbers and stuff that you supply here on the threads. I have tried to understand what you are saying, but when i try to set up through my lapton, different questions and a different IT language prompts me. Even when i go to the self help option on my router, the walk through guide is difficult.
I think i will have to settle for the button lag a bit longer.

Thanks for the advice and support lads.....

Seeing as there are some people here who know their stuff - virgin have offered me a 20mb package for an extra fiver a month, is that likely to sort problem even if opponent has crap connection? Im guessing not and reluctant to invest money in what is basically a problem with one game.

That wont sort the problem as 10mb is more than enough. It is something to do with the game/settings on your router/PS3 not your connection.

Worm...

Yep it's a tough one mate...as these things are a bit of a pain to sort out on here. Whats the router do you have - name and code i.e. Linksys WRT54G for example.

If you pass me your email address I'll try and forward u - tcp/ip optimiser and hopefully with settings attached - are u 10M, 20M???

I have BT voyager 2110 - 3MB. I used to have a small private company who used to supply me with 1.5MB when i was playing PES06, 9 times out of 10 it was perfect.

But now......at the moment with BT, i have PC & MAC laptops wireless. I use both laptops for work and leisure and they must be protected from anything that might pose a threat to their security. If you could help that would be great. Thank you.

A common occurance is VIRGIN MEDIA 10mb.

Virgin have terrible speeds on their 10mb service as there are too many people on the network.

If you check the virginmedia website there is a forum where hundreds have the same problem on 10mb.

I bet if you do speedtests around the time you are trying to play you get barely 2mb.

I have recently upgraded to 50meg. Its coming on 1st dec, I got free installation (£50) so went for it.

Massive problems with virgin, they seem to throttle people when online gaming which affects PES extremely badly.
