For some reason no matter how well my defense plays my centerbacks never manage a rating above a 6. Even with a clean sheet their ratings can be as low as 5 whilst my wing backs manage a 6.5-7. Anybody have a clue as to why this happens?

try to move your defence line a little bit forward
also, in team setting :
set "back line" to A or B and "offside trap" to A or B
i play ARSENAL with 4-3-1-2 formation (back line "A" / offsidetrap "A")
sometimes my defence line manages rating as high as 8

it summat to do with attacking the goal, if u play centre back overlap and that players is always attacking trying to score when u have the ball. (if u score with centreback score rating will be higher so allotted them the penalty, freekick if u think they can score)

so the rating will be higher, that why full-back get higher rating cos they alway overlap down the wing crossing ball in.

I dont really agree with you.
I play 3-5-2 and micah richards is always scoring goals for me and he isnt in the ratings.All my cbs score quite a few golas and they dont concede a lot either

Putting in lots of passes helps the ratings of defenders quite alot, even if it means just knocking it about in your own half.
And obviously, performing great defensive displays helps alot aswell.

the point to moving defense line forward (back line A) is that CBTs and SBs are playing as DMs which makes "real" DMs more free to help the offensive line, though this is risky against fast strikers and wingers so they should be very good
another thing , playing agressively helps gaining some points in rating. for example, i tend to use sliding tackle (with caution) as much as possible

my players get in i have serio ramos and Bos, bos scores alot of goals or me when i play in him midfield too there both in my rankings
