Classic Arsenal Team

I thought about replacing either PES or WE United with a classic Arsenal team (1971 until Wengers era), and I wondered if any of you hardcore Arsenal fans out there could give me some advice on who to add and help me out with some stats too.

I'm not all that into the old history of Arsenal (I'm 18...), so any help would be appreciated.

Players I thought about having: (Some of them I don't know too well though)

Pat Jennings (allready in the game?)
Lee Dixon
Kenny Sansom
Peter Storey
David O'Leary
Tony Adams (captain)
David Rocastle
Ian Wright
Alan Smith
Liam Brady
Graham Rix
Steve Bould
Bob Wilson
Nigel Winterburn
George Armstrong
Charlie George

Other possibilites:

"Faxe" Jensen :p
David Seaman

Hey tommy-d. Thanks for the additions.

Anyone got any ideas for stats/appearances for the players listed? I can get Adams, Jennings and Dixon from PES2, and I've made Ian Wright allready, but i still need PES3 faces for these.

Contributions are very welcome.

Some thoughts on the team. My era was from 1987 onwards but my Dad was a season ticket holder in the 70's and often talks of the players.

Gks
Pat Jennings - Some would say had his best days at spurs but had was still a fanastic keeper for years for us. Best years 78-80.
Bob Wilson- True Arsenal man Bob was fantastically brave and often sacrificed himself for the cause. Best year 70/71
John Lukic- John was a great shot stopper who had a knack at saving penalties. He was a big factor in our revival under George Graham. Many including me were sad when he was replaced.
Verdict : On talent Jennings. It would be Seaman but he is still playing.

Rb
Lee Dixon- Unrivaled at rb for a decade in the greatest defence ever assembled. Even took penalties for a while.
Peter Storey- Fearsome tackler in the 70's hardman image. Peter was an excellent penalty taker.
Viv Anderson- Best days at forest Viv was still Arsenal and Englands right back for most of the 80's. Spoiled things by going to utd.

Lb
Kenny Sansom- Great going forward and rarely beaten by a winger. Kenny was class and our most capped player.
Pat Rice- Constant through out 70's and worth considering as a backup.
Nigel Winterburn- Hard tackler and never gave up.
Verdict- Sansom should start as he was the better prospect going forward.

Cb
David O'Leary- Pacy and classy David made the simple things look easy
Tony Adams (captain)- Mr Arsenal
Steve Bould- Underated and great at set pieces the master of the near post flick on.
Frank Mclintock- Captain of the first double side and must be in the squad.

RM
David Rocastle- My favourite player ever. Could take people on had pace and scored goals. Rocky also liked a tackle.
George Armstrong-Fast and with bags of energy.

CM
Liam Brady- Great left foot wonderful passer must start.
Paul Davis- Another passer who played in the team for years.
Michael Thomas- Scored our most important goal ever and has a great engine.
John Jensen- Although popular was actually pretty crap.
David Platt- Scored some vital goals but had best days elsewhere.

LM
Anders Limpar- Bags of skill and could score a few as well. Unfortunatly frozen out as Graham lost the plot mid 90's.
Brian Marwood - A bit of a 1 year wonder for us but what a year. Brilliant at taking corners and crossing also scored a few.
Graham Rix- Played longer than the others but not as good as Limpar.

Forwards
Ian Wright - a legend must start.
Charlie George- My old mans favourite. Probably best played just behind Wrighty. Full of skill with a rocket of a shot on him also a great passer but with an aggresive streak so if they play up front together they could be volatile.
Alan Smith- Great and the air and good at holding up play with a neat line in flicks. A great target man.
John Radford- Great in the air and strong however I'm biased towards Smith
Charlie Nicholas- Again better in a deeper role. Charlie showed flashes of genius and was a master dribbler but very inconsistent.
Paul Merson- Could play up front or as an attacking midfielder so would be in my squad. Skilfull and when younger was pacy.
Frank Stapleton- Great in the air but another tarnished by defection to united.

Being Arsenal i would play a 4-4-2

gk Jennings

rb Dixon cb Adams capt cb O'Leary lb Sansom

rm Rocastle cm Davis cm Brady lm Limpar

cf George
cf Wright

Good analysis there miff1977. As i grew up in the 80s/early 90s, the Arsenal team full of Dixon, Adams, Rocastle, Merson, Smith, Campball, Limpar and Wright are the classic players i remember. I have one of Ian Wright's videos (100 Not Out) and the it's clear on there that Limpar was a major contributor in assisting Wrightie with goals. It seemed that when he left, Wrightie came off the boil a tad..

Nice one miff. I'll start out with trying to make some faces then.

As i'm not that good at making stats, it would be nice if someone could start out with the stats. We allready have Jennings, Adams, Winterburn (need some tweeking to make him the good old Nigel) and Dixon (also tweeking).

A good idea would be to replace west ham with Classic Arsenal. a lot of english players you know.

I´ve already made the 97-98 Double winning Arsenal in to the game and a classic Barcelona, but I need stats for the Classic Arsenal. Those would be highly appreciated. Even though THIS ARSENAL(The Invincibles) has to be the best ever, it´s fun playing with the "oldies" as well.

How comes whenever anyone asks for Classic Arsenal, Classic Chelsea etc. stats, nobody comes up with the stats, just people who should be in there. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Somebody asks for a few stats, and you go off the mark, and leave that person with nothing. I will help him with the only one I know how to make out of the ones he asked for.
