Comparison to PS2 version - doesn't feel right

Thought I'd try PC version to see if it would work on my old PC - Athlon 1Ghz, 512MB, Hercules 9800SE. I bought a PS2 controller adapter from play.com and the game plays fine on 800x600 with low detail. Wolfs final patch worked great so so far so good.

My only problem is that the controls do not feel quite 'right' compared to the PS2 version. I think it is to do with the left analogue not being sensitive enough to diagonal positions, like you have to get it in just the right direction or you just run vertically or horizontally. Or maybe I can't get the same number of directions out of it? I mainly notice it when I try and jink past a defender with a quick change of diagonal direction - which I've got down to a tee on the PS2.

In control panel you can test the buttons/sticks and it picks up subtle movements perfectly. So is it a performance issue when my machine is running the game, or do other people experience the same thing? Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the game to the controller?

Any help / comments appreciated.

I was feeling the same way for a while, though I still hadn't abandoned my Gravis Eliminator Aftershock (PS2 style) for a PS2->PC adapter. The analog acted more like digital input than anything else - running diagonally was pretty tough to do.

Luckily, after some tweaking with Gravis' Xperience software in terms of sensitivity, dead zone & acceleration, I've been able to get it pretty close to the PS2 feel. (Now if only my X button wouldn't randomly register as stuck down at times, I'd be clear on controller issues)

So I think it's possible (!). But I'm not sure if you can make the tweaks with the adapters. I've read that the adapters are pretty iffy consistency-wise, so perhaps there's a certain one out there that works best, or at least has some more config options than the others, etc.

its the same...but the issue is that the PC version only supports 8 directional input from the L Analog stick, whereas the PS2 version understands full 360 degree movement

you can see why its less precise

its irritating as well

hmm...

not the news I was hoping for.

Which would you prefer - fully patched working PC version, or non-patched PS2 with better control?

Are you certain of the control interpretation limitation? Believe me, I don't wish to come on as a < 10 post newb and challenge you or anything, so don't take it that way. I'm just curious and now feel it necessary to pay a bit closer attention when I'm playing after work tonight :)

...because it really feels pretty darn close to right to me as it's set now - I felt downtrodden to begin with, but after I made the changes (and figured out my pass-button problem), I was immediately relieved and drawn into playing the game with the same desire & fury I get at my buddies w/the PS2 (and it's in 1024x768!). It's definitely enough to keep me playing the game. I'm not quite the purist that some PES/WE fans are, but...I mean, I got through the dribble challenges fine with the current setup.

edit: yeah, I tried a couple times to slow down my dribble with the analog w/o stopping, and it is still digital/8-directional in that aspect.

I guess I just made it easier to reach those digital points on my pad. It still carries an illusion of 360 movement at times, and is much improved pre-tweakage.

(PC version)
To me the problem is the same, with Gravis GamePad I can't get precise movement and passing (just 8 digital positions), and it's a BAD thing.
How comes Konami missed such a simple task ?

Another issue with the PC controls. Does anyone think the power bar goes up far quicker on the PC version compared to the PS2?

why don't you guys just use the keyboard i have two controllers and i don't use any, in fact i wouldn't have bought my PS2 unless for that game so if you don't like the controls instead of just buying an expensive graphics chip, and a cool controller just buy a ps2 :)

I don't think using the keyboard will help improve the feel of the game.

I had already played the PS2 version to death and as I will probably never own 'modified' PS2, I thought the PC version would be good to try for the patched updates.

I'm still playing the PC version but I am worried that I'll be crap at the PS2 version when I go back. Also, the gameplay isn't as good because the control is not as accurate and the feel of the gameplay has been the one thing that has kept me playing IIS / Pro Evo games.

I think that once I've done the treble on 5 stars I'll not play it again as it annoys me to miss chances, run into defenders etc because I am not in control.

If the control was up to scratch it would wipe the floor with the PS2 version, but as it is I feel like I'm playing for the sake of it, and the novelty of proper kits etc is wearing off.

Just buy the Logitech Dual Action Gamepad - I use to play WE7I and it rocks. I would actually go as far and say that it's better than the ps2 gamepad! Give it a try.

Cheers

Maybe you don't understand, but as CtrlAltDel say, PC version only support 8 direct. input from gamepad, so advice like buy this and that isn't on the spot.

Power Bar TOO quick

I've never played the PS2 version, but just started playing on PC and the power bar is way too fast to control with any accuracy. Unless I tap it, it's nearly always full-power. I think this could be due to the processor speed, that Konami haven't adjusted for in the port. It would be nice if there were some way to control it. Otherwise I'll keep shooting into the top deck.

I've heard that WE7:I has fixed this. Can anyone confirm?
