the shot plus R2 works really well in some instances. One on ones are good for it, cus he just slots the ball away nicely instead of blasting it straight at the keeper, altho blasting it does work sometimes, also, try and know what foot the man you have is best with, e.g if youre coming in from the right and you have a right footbed player on the ball, (say c.ronaldo coming into the box diagonally from the right wing) and you use shoot plus R2, he will go for a place shot at the near post which will hardly ever go in, BUT if ronaldos coming from the left, and you shoot with R2 then, he will go for a nice curler into the far right corner of the net, i think what im trying to say is sometimes its best to go for a normal blast shot and other times when you know you can curl one into the far corners its best to use R2.
