I have Swap Magic (the device is called a "slide card"). I think it only cost me $30.

I prefer slide cards to mod chips because they're cheaper and because you don't have to open your console to install them. Your warranty remains intact.

The Swap Magic slide card works perfectly with PES 5 for the PS2.

One tip: PES 5 always boots up in PAL/50Hz mode. Standard North American TVs cannot recognize this signal. So your picture will initially flicker in black and white. DO NOT PANIC.

The first prompt will ask you to select a language. Just hit :x: for Engilsh, or use the D-Pad to choose another language.

Then the next prompt will enable you to swith the game to NTSC/60 Hz mode. North American TVs recognize this signal. Press down once on the D-Pad and then press :x:. This should take you to the "Test NTSC/60 Hz Mode" screen. The black and white flickering should cease. Now just press START and you're done!:)

I think personally Konami will abandon the US market altogether with Winning Eleven on any platform, next gen. or otherwise.

You have to see the hate for the North American market on the Japanese gaming boards which unlike ours, are frequented by developers and programmers from the many Japanese software houses. They get really involved in their gaming community and implement a lot of patches for RPGs just out of popular requests on some of the major forums. Some staff from Konami were really, really dissing the North American market and the XBox 360 saying they weren't going out of their way to convert many titles for the machine. Apparently the dog heads this year in the WE/PES title came from a poll on one of the major gaming forums about what special heads the gamers would like this year. Another 9% of the votes swinging one way would have seen big cats (lions, tigers, etc.) and 12% voted for fish-heads!!! The Japanese are very into their RPGs and have online clans represented by animals, hence last years inclusion of the horse heads, eagle heads, etc.

They release PES for the European market as it's their big cash-cow to fund a lot of the specialist RPG titles. Obviously this also explains why the Japanese market can get 4 versions of the soccer title in one year while Europe simply gets one port. They released WE7:I in the USA as they thought it would have the same impact (and bring in the same money) as PES in Europe but they didn't figure that the gaming community here isn't driven by forums and online communities, but advertising.

Unless somebody figures out how to make the European/Asian games play on the PS3/XBox 360, North America will have no more Konami soccer titles to play indefinitely.

To the original poster, are you sure he wasn't just referring to 'next gen' conversion? Perhaps he was only saying that they won't bother bringing one out for the Xbox 360 / PS3 until 2007; I'd be surprised if they cancelled the PS2 version seeing as how it's still listed on all official sites.

No, they specifically said it wasn't being released for ANY FORMAT. You have to remember that the PS3 isn't being released in Europe until Spring 2007 so there won't be any PES title for that until at least then and I suspect they'll release either a mod of WE10 (released on the PS3 in Japan) or wait until the regular Fall release and release PES7 as their first soccer title for next-gen systems in Europe. There's no way they'll release PES6 on the PS3 and then release PES7 a few months later! The Japanese shchedule for the series release remains the same however because they get the PS3 in Spring 2006.

The official website link that I posted in the first thread has been up for months and if you read it, is entirely inaccurate. It talks about "new leagues" etc. when we know clearly PES5 didn't introduce any new leagues, just some new teams. Then I looked at the WE8:I press release they did and it was near identical. The rest of the content is identical to the official Konami PES5 page. This old Konami single-page posting is the only "official" notification that the game was intended to be released and as I said, it's months old and I think was put up in error. In the forthcoming games list, WE9:I isn't listed for North America even though they have games listed before and after the Spring period.

Nah, there has been official word about WE9 in north america. Check this link: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/642/642880p1.html

And I believe the 'new leagues' refers to licensing for, for example, the dutch league.

I guess I'd still be pretty surprised if they didn't release WE9 over here in a couple of months time.

Here's another link: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/642/642955p1.html

Those articles are dated Back in August before PES5 was even released though! It says WE9:I is the first to go online when in fact PES4/WE8:I PC were both online!

As for the Dutch league, that was licensed back in PES4/WE8:I so it's hardly new!

Any article 4 months old and released before PES5 was even out is going to be suspect to say the least.

Look at this part of the IGN article"

"Konami has completed more licensed deals, and has added new teams and leagues in the Dutch, Italian, and Spanish arenas"

We had those leagues in PES4/WE8:I

This IGN article is based on a VERY old press release mostly based on the WE8:I release and inaccurate to say the least.

PES is European only; in North America it is called WE9 and our WE8 did not have those things you mentioned (dutch leagues, online playability), which is why they mention them as upgrades.

The article is from august because that's when WE9 was released in Japan, so that's when Konami is going to be talking about which areas will recieve the game at which times, etc.

The point of the article is that it is official press release saying that WE9 is coming to North America, and the folks at IGN (as per the article) even played an english version of the game to show that it was coming along.

Not saying you're incorrect about what you saw, but there is some room for misinterpretation here... Also, it would set an unusual precedent for the new Winning Eleven to not hit North America as well as go back on official press release saying that it was being brought out there (here). Also I'd expect Konami to take it off of their official site if it weren't coming out, so as not to disappoint their NA fans.

(Also, this one post in this lone forum is the first anyone appears to have heard about the cancellation of the NA release)

Edit: I mean, you're telling us that this entry: http://www.konami.com/gs/gameinfo.php?id=164&pid=1
...on Konami's website is just some kind of freak error? Forgive me if I'm a little skeptical about this post.

My WE8:I had Dutch, Italian and Spanish licensed leagues!!!

Look: http://www.konami.com/gs/gameinfo.php?id=131

Official Konami press release for WE8:I claiming those very leagues.

Of course IGN played an English version of the game, PES5 was that English version with a different title screen! What's the major difference between PES and WE:I titles? The box it comes in and the title screen!

I mean, read the article, it was saying they weren't allowed to show any of the online screens! What utter crap! WE8:I was online!

Konami's PR/Marketing dept. is notoriously bad and this press release for WE9 (they don't even refer to it as 'International') is a carbon copy of the PES5 one except for the name. It was posted at the same time. More likely an error especially given they still have ones up for previous games which haven't been updated/removed.

Also, IGN say Jan/Feb which is still Winter (Spring begins March 22/23) and yet this Konami release from August 2005 says Spring 2006!

(The screenshots are from PES5 too as they still have Pro Evolution Soccer on the adboards along with The Sun, BT Broadband etc. which is nonsense for the North American market.)

Remember, IGN famously touted Halo 3 as being released for the XBox 360 launch but retracted it a week later and removed the article.

I don't know how it was with previous iterations, but the North American release of WE8 did not have online capability or the new leagues etc. There was a re-released version that we never got, that added online functionality and gameplay tweaks.

At the moment, I don't really see anything anywhere to suggest that they are going back on their August 17th press release, except for this post. IGN (and Gamespot, and every other large NA gaming media outlet) are just reporting about the expo on August 17th where Konami mentioned bringing WE9 to NA, and exhibited a playable english version of the game to NA audiences.

Edit: Did you type up what you saw on the program from memory? (IE the capslocked portion of your post)... because I'd be interested to read an actual transcript.

One other edit: Actually North America's version was called WE8:I, but it didn't have online or all that other crap.

Third edit: editted original post to reflect above edit :p :p

I would expect that the version we (NA) recieve in spring will be called "Winning Eleven 9" again.

No dude, look at the official release for WE8:I:

http://www.konami.com/gs/gameinfo.php?id=131

and the release schedule: http://www.konami.com/gs/gameslist.php?genreid=8

Clearly, all the official releases for the North American market have been called WE#:International.

This release has the 'International' part missing out of the name.

Those are the OFFICIAL release names.

WE6/WE7/WE8/WE9 are the initial Japanese names for the August release in Asia for their market, they always add the 'International' suffix for North America. I bought WE8:International in Best Buy for the PS2 and the PC. I still have the boxes and it clearly says "International" after the name!!!

I don't have an official transcript, I CLEARLY heard them say there would be no soccer title from Konami on any format for North America until after the PS3 is released over here.

At the end of the day. I hope the interview was utter BS and I'm 100% wrong but I know what I heard.

If it does turn out to be wrong, I'll be happy.

Yeah, you're right about the International name, I editted my post.

Still, Konami / IGN is right about what they refer to as upgrades in the new version.

Dunno about the TV show, I guess I'm hoping there was a miscommunication somewhere. Cheers for the information though, for better or for worse ;)

Maybeeeee!! Maybe they are saying there will be no WE9:I because they are changing the name to WE9 but is still WE9:I.. Because if you look at the number 9 in the box they show at the konami website, is the same type of number used for WE6I WE7I and WE8I.. Maybe they're just changing the name.. I hope your info is wrong too.. But thank you for the info anyway.

That's the point of the post, there is no WE9/WE9:I coming out in the Spring now for North America.
