CPU through balls undefendable

Not just CPU, Online Real Madrid through balls from defence are pretty much undefendable, out of the 40 that people try per game, guaranteed 10 get through resulting in 3 Ronaldo goals :(

Good thread, same issues here. In defense, I've given up worrying about the CPU through balls. Apply pressure on the passer, try to let the AI control your chasing defender, and have the keeper come forward - and you'll still concede a goal once in a while. The difficulty level of the opponents doesn't even seem to matter. Basically Konami have "boosted" the AI by allowing it to cheat. In the previous version the AI would just score free kicks from anywhere, nothing you could do.
And as you people say, in attack the lob through ball is pure murder. The combo between a good passer like Xavi or Xabi Alonso, and a fast striker like any of the Barca guys or Ronaldo, means endless 1-on-1s, which are extremely easy to convert. I think some midfielders have a new card now, something like "soft lob." They pass even better than usual.

And yeah, you can fool around and score lobs, acrobatics, and aimed shots (which look great) - but that's only if you don't really care if you win. Which is OK in exhibitions, of course.

I’ve been playing around with different levels and I find that Regular is too easy but Professional too hard. I enjoy the challenge on Professional, but one thing I can simply not defend is the CPU’s ability to needle a perfect through ball. That is just destroying me right now.

There are two elements to this issue:

First, the CPU has this magical ability to thread a through ball, always wrong footing my defenders. I watch the replay and I see the player just turning and running while my defenders are either standing of going in the opposite direction. Now I have tried this with several teams, among which some really defense based teams like Italy and Juventus. I have checked if I have set my tactics in any strange way, but everything is normal. Yet, on average the CPU gets at least 5 one-on-one’s per game, 2 of which will definitely go in.

Secondly, putting the CPU’s ball carrier under pressure counts for nothing in this game. They are able to hit a perfect through ball even when the player has his back to my goal. Again, I watch the replay, and the player just magically twists and delivers what is a faultless lobbed through ball, resulting in a 1 on 1 with my keeper.

How do you counter that from happening?

Any tips, suggestions, tactical changes I should do?

I think adjusting your defenders positions is a useful thing to combat the attacks of the AI. I do this frequently, mostly to defend crosses as often the AI takes your CB out of position to come across to block a cross... so I move him back into the middle and more often than not that guy ends up intercepting the cross. But I use the positioning to try and prevent through balls too, some are unpreventable... but you can move up and play them offside quickly or alternatively go with the player making the run and cut the pass off when it is made.

I can't even remember what the buttons are to change player but you can move away from the action to the player you want to control and position them where you want, and then return to the action.

That helps me defend on top player.

same thoughts here mate, absolutely, always there's the moment where a pin point pass comes where u can't beat it, and u know the result in the end, it is really messing the game, u sometimes feel the game is good, but there u have it those silly moments of pinpoint cheating pass, striker gets passed the cb like a ghost, one on one and goal, lost the game!!! i wonder those who gave the game a positive rating tell me how to counter these moments...

Hi there

You guys should apply Well Timed SLIDING TACKLE in different situations.

IMO sometimes it is the ONLY way to prevent a COM goal.

I called it Sliding Tackle Frenzy.

Good luck to your games.

this is the worst bug ever because of it i stopped playing pes 2013

Is it a bug just because you fail to counter it?

Let me tell you, it's actually EASY to avoid... you just need to learn to "Super Cancel" the "rails" that the AI puts on your players when you defend. Then all you need to do is intercept the pass with your head and clear it to a side back or a throw in. In other words, play the game yourself, and not let the AI do it for you...

PS. I'm not saying that everything is fine with PES, but once you master Super Cancel you can at least remove 70% of the grief against this game...

Yes, and patch 1.02 removes some of the AI's obsession with loooong through balls so now it's even easier to defend against.

the only good thing about this advanced deadly thru balls tactic, is that if you play them right your through balls are undefendable as well

But that still does not excuse the fact that this feature is completely stupid unrealistic and untimateley no skill or fun...yet another FU with this years version

Hi,

Been playing PES for a while now (since high school). This is my first post in this forum.

The through ball doesn't seem to be a problem in terms of offline gameplay for me (or are u guys talking about online play? haven't played yet. my connection sucks). The key is always having a back four and see that your defenders stay close to each strikers/offensive players. Smart defending is KEY. DO NOT leave any gap by moving your defenders forward unless you are certain to snatch the ball. Use the midfielders or better yet your DM to handle most of the tackling.

Body balance is key for defenders. buy/train good defenders with great body balance and speed. I use x and square button together when defending, combine with anticipation of movements. The last part depends on your experience.I use the square button to make another player get close and outmuscle opponent while controlling another player myself and use x to help. defend in numbers, 2 vs 1 if situation permits because the AI can turn players like heskey into a messi.

I also found out that when you use AI to tackle (square button), they usually get the ball.

Currently playing in superstar difficulty using barcelona and never loses, trashing teams 6-0, 8-1, 7-2(against madrid, feels good since i'm a barca fan).

Agree with Zu10.

I'm using Roma in Master League with Top Player difficulty, and defending is about positioning defender to cover the space, just like when you watch Chelsea against Barcelona, do not rush in. You need help from other teammates to battle the ball while you control your CB to cover space except for some circumstances like one on one, you have options to cover the shoot or battle the ball with double X, but it all depends on your CB and the attacker, if Ronaldo has the ball, well it is hard you need to have good CB like Puyol or Vidic or Chellini, I find it to have good chance to win the ball with strong CB against strong attacker, average CB should cover the shot, practice using R2+movement to cover the shot because sometimes X or hold up play is not enough with strong attacker.

Try to play the game with tactics and you will feel the beauty of it. Simple enough, it is more than just button mashing.

Spot on mate. You need to set up your defence according to A) The strengths and weaknesses of your team and B) take into account the opposition, if you're playing against pace defend deep, if not push up, simple.

Also you can see the attacking player on the shoulder of the defender making a move, track the run and intercept the ball, even if the player gets in behind the trick is not to panic, bring the keeper out a little and chase back ,if you catch up even a bit you can nudge the forward and he'll miss-hit the shot.

I don't have this problem. Most of the time, it's CPU who has to defend against my thru pass.

You should play around with these settings:
Pressing: Try setting it between 14-20
Defensive Line: Try setting it between 0-6
Compactiveness: Try setting it between 0-6

When you are defending/pressing, try to use your midfield to defend against the CPU's midfield. Combination of R2, X and Square. The idea is try not to move your CB and RB/LB out of position.

Happy playing

Well, it's not that hard to play. If you don't want the through balls you can do it like this:

Become a central defender and stay between the striker and you keeper. If there comes a trough ball he will intercept it. Besides this you can put a second pressure with one of you midfielders to get the ball before he can pass it.

If you play like this, you could easily win offline on highest level.
