i track back with the left analogue thats all untill i wait for my team mate to come automatically just in case i fall short. when my teammate arrives i press slide tackle to get the ball or stop the guy from passing. if i miss it, the other guy i was waiting for is then selected and then with that player depending on how close or far i am i press x or slide tackle

With that said. defending in demo 2 is very difficult, for a few reasons
- controlling player is a bit too lose
- CPU a.i dribbling a bit too powerful wit lesser skilled players on demo1
- Your CPU teammate A.i does poor job at times helping in defense

But i'm happy to confirm, I own full version, and these issues are totally gone.

They are better maybe, but they are not gone. Friendly AI defenders don't cover, they don't mark properly and they keep weird positioning more often than they don't.

The AI is still an amazing dribbler, regardless of which player it controls, and in many cases a foul is the only way to stop a relatively slow striker on a dribbling spree.

Your teams defensive positioning will leave you pressuring the opponent one by one, or two against one with big gaps between your midfield and defensive line. AI pressure as a team, marking wide players and boxing in the ball carrier with 3-4 defenders on a regular basis.

It's not an all black picture, but it's a charcoal one. The game has good points too, and two player is insane. But everything that involves AI sucks to be honest.

Can anyone tell me how to use the speed burst button to chase down opponents online. It seems like whenever I knock a through ball to a winger my opponent is able to chase me down and disposses me every single time, even If I'm a couple paces away from them. Yet I can't chase down Benzema with the likes of Evra or Bale. To make matters worse when I sit back and play defense all these Real Madrid, Barca users do is dribble around in circles until something opens up then boom goal. I hold on to the pressure button and speed button yet it seems like their guys are going at another speed to mines.

Just tried a training match with Everton, 11 vs 2 and the 2 CPU defenders were Distin and Heitinga... they managed to keep the ball from me, over 2 minutes at times, before I could foul or get lucky with a rebound....

AI dribling is insane!

I've had a bit of success by just holding down x and square(ps3) at the same time and using L1 to select the player closest to the ball. You may give away the odd free kick but most of the time you just crowd the opposition out and come away with the ball.

Using R2+pressure and knowing when to release R2 while holding pressure is vital in this game. Also it can be very helpful to add a second defender by holding R2,pressure,pass but be careful with it. You don´t have to use this method every time though, just using the left stick to close space, cutting pass lines and using strength to defend against weaker players is important as well.

What happens using left stick Dean?

If you can't defend in this game, then you're doing something wrong. It's harder than usual, yes, but far from impossible. Practice, watch a tutorial vid, practice some more and stop whining.

At least keeping clean sheets is a challenge every now and then, as opposed to earlier editions of the game. (not counting the super scripted competition modes).

This seems to be the trick to defending in PES 2012, although by no means the remedy.

My advice with regards to defending in PES 2012 is to largely forget about the RT 'hold up' function as it has clearly not been properly implemented and attempts to use it against attacking play that moves far too quickly will most likely just leave your defense exposed. A better way to think of the RT/R2 function is as the 'leave gaps function'.

It is a bit sad to say that in PES 2012, you want to let the AI do as much of your defending for you as possible. Use the :square: to call for a team mate to pressure and manouvre the player you are controlling to block any gaps that are opening up wihich your AI controlled defenders aren't dealing with. Worthy to note, is that constantly holding down the RB/R1 button to run when defending is a cardinal sin, only sprint if there is a clear need to sprint.

If your teammate is pressuring well, then it way be worthwhile to snappily hit the LB/L1 in order to change to the teammate in order to make a quick snap tackle, but most of the time you will either give away a freekick or your player will happlessly attack an area of space behind the opposition player.

The bottom line is that defending is fucking awful in PES 2012 because Konami are in the middle of changing the system and have not got enough of it finished in time for the release of this game.

What version of the 'full game' do you have and what region did you get from? i.e. is the game 1.00, 1.01, etc?

I have pre-ordered the UK release for the PC and in the meantime, am enjoying my 'unofficial trial full version', which has been patched to 1.01. Whilst their are slight improvements, it isn't like night and day and the defending aspect in the game is still very poorly calibrated.

I can see quite a few online rage quits with this crap as Messi et al glide through about 8 defenders with as many yards as they slip and slide around all over the pace, none of them dare showing the audacity to actually put a foot into the ball (without fouling....defenders in PES are great at giving away fouls)

Well said, totally agree the defending is screwed up this year - I can see what they were trying to accomplish, but they've just failed making it sometimes impossbile to defend.

I wouldn't say people are doing anything wrong - previous versions seemed to work fine, the new additions, whilst well meant, have made keeping a clean sheet a thing of the past.

If I play catenaccio, I can more or less guarantee a narrow win or 0-0 draw. Keeping clean sheets is hard if you're attacking non stop though.

Yeah i hate to admit it, but it seems to work out best when i'm playing 4-5-1 and counter attacks rather than playing 4-4-2. It's frustrating, since i like to build up the play waiting for the right gap to open. This year i have to wait and time my attacks more than usual.

if only you can change your defence line to 1 on the quick counter setiing as it annoys me when my cbs are far up the field as if they fail trying to activste the offside trao and instead they let in a goal from a thorugh ball

I've found that learning when to physically apply a bit of pressure makes things easier. A slight shoulder barge can cause a poor touch allowing you to nip in. Plus mastering slide tackles is a huge advantage.

My issue with defending is no longer with what I'm doing, as in if I time a tackle well or not. I've gotten the hang of what's required of me and I'm doing better.
My issue is with the CPU players. I can't get why CPU controlled defenders just run away from the attackers, leaving them wide open for tap ins.
Am I doing something wrong settings wise, or is there a way my defenders could be a little bit more intelligent? lol

I'm finding the right trigger tackle very effective when timed correctly, brilliant for standing tackles and winning the ball back, has to be timed perfectly though.

hold up play and releasing R2 with the defender is a great method to poke the ball out.

I was impressed with my first ever experience with man marking. Heskey, of all people, was doing significant damage with two early goals and I man marked him and that show was over. He didn't even touch the ball the rest of the match.

i am on my 3rd controller now... ffs this defending is very frustrating esp wen playin against a good player who passes everythin to messi for a mazing run, really its bordering on impossible to keep up with the little fuker let alone put a tackle in!!!!! the dribble control is set far to close and easy in my opinion. 2011 was a little arkward to dribble but they have over compensated way too much this year....
